Full Version: How Many Hosting Accounts per Server?
The Planet Forums > System Administration > General Support Questions

Hello,

I am wondering how many hosting accounts per server should be allowed. I know there are several factors but as a general rule.

I am currently looking at getting a dual xeon server and beefing up the memory later on. But for right now we are running a value series server with 512MB Ram.

Your comments are greatly appreciated.

Depends on how big and active are these domains (php/cgi/mail/ftp/mysql/ etc ...).

The number of domains you can host on a server is the number you think is safe to keep server running smoothly and give a good service to your customers. Usual is to host from 100 to 200 to give a good service thinking on small sites.

I've seen responsive servers(SCSI ONLY) with cpanel at 450, going over 500 was however, not so wise a move.

.

I also have domains eating each one 2 whole dual xeons/scsi.

What will you do to restore one server with 450 domains on it if it crashes? ... not a good idea to push to the limits.

It always depends on the customers. I've seen a smaller machine run hot with just 2 domains on it myself(busy/large forums). But yes, the number of customers is a concern, as is the size of each etc... However, while I manage the machines, I don't own them, and so can't necessarily buy 5 machines and put 100 domains on each either.
To each their own, I just chimed in to show it was possible(the machine reached a max of 660 accounts on it) but now I've been transferring clients off.
