Just had a test email returned to me with the following header:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.
A message that you sent has not yet been delivered to one or more of its recipients after more than 24 hours on the queue on ptb-relay03.xxxx.xxx.

The message identifier is: 1ByX7b-0001Np-Q5
The subject of the message is: Test
The date of the message is: Sat, 21 Aug 2004 15:45:36 +0100

The address to which the message has not yet been delivered is:

Delay reason: Malformed SMTP reply from xxxxx-xxxxx.com [xx.xxx.xx.xxx] in response to STARTTLS:
Enter PEM pass phrase:

No action is required on your part. Delivery attempts will continue for some time, and this warning may be repeated at intervals if the message remains undelivered. Eventually the mail delivery software will give up, and when that happens, the message will be returned to you.

Any ideas what: Malformed SMTP reply means.

When I re-installed Exim it asked for a password? what was that all about and could that be the reason?

Another problem I now have is mail get bounced back from:

aol.com
freeserve.co.uk
mymail.ro
ntlworld.com

Tried ping these domains from the server and it comes back with unknown host.

Email headers says unrouteable mail domain.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I am not an expert but it looks like you do not have reverse dns set up on your domain names. Email the people who you registered your domain name (the one you use as your nameservers) with.

If you use EV1 then email domain@ev1servers.net and ask them to set up reverse dns on you nameservers.

Again, I am not an expert but if you have never requested this then this will be what your problem is. Host such as AOL bounce mail from servers that do not have reverse dns.

Cheers
