I'm no DNS expert - but here's what I've done. I have 2 servers with ev1, and I'm consolidating them in to 1.
My old server: ns1.oldserver.com and ns2.oldserver.com - now I can't just add those in to my new server because they're 'bound' to IPs.
So here is what I've done:
I took ns2.oldserver.com and 'detach it' from the IP at the registrar. When it's available I add it to the new server.
Then I did the same with ns1.oldserver.com - so now they're both pinging properly, I'm feeling pretty cool.. BUT all the sites that still have NS1/NS2.oldserver.com are still GOING to the old server..
If I ping it and it shows the new IP, shouldn't it direct to the new server or am I missing something here? does something else somewhere else need to propogate?
Thanks for any help!

propagation you need to wait until it propagates 72 hours before full and point you dns at the registar to the new server ip's
if you want it to go faster you would have to modify the dns records on the old server to point to the new one
if you are running Cpanel you could just use the cluster feature and it would do it automaticly for you I move sites between servers all the time and the change is all most instant most of the time

Thanks for your help! I started this process several days ago -
what confuses me is that the old nameserver names are pinging the new IPs - so I figured when i type in the http: address it would take me to the new server..
As far as clustering, I've not used that - but since I'm getting rid of the old server - this has been an upgrade process - is it still a good option?

not Necessarily it just depends on where you are in the world

ok thanks, well I'll wait it out a bit longer..
Also, when I changed the ip at the registrar, i changed my old NS1/NS2 to NS3 and NS4, and put the new ones at NS1/NS2 once I was able to assign them IPs in cpanel.
Now it appears that sites are hitting NS3/NS4 when I look at it on dnsstuff.com, although none of the domains are assigned NS3/4.. I'm just hoping this all gets resolved before I get billed for my server again, as 90% of the sites i was able to have the NSs changed - so I just have a few left to bring over.
Thanks again.
