Full Version: eMail Virus Scanner

I currently use PLESK Extended (not for multi server, just for some of the other features) and would like to move to a cPanel server.

PLESK has just come out with an integrated email-virus scanner for $210/year that looks pretty good according to their ads (of course), and will presumably be part of their new "live updates" software maintenance package.

I am curious about what is the consensus on virus scanning among cPanel users... I am interested in commnets regarding qmail or Exim.

Mostly I am looking for ease of use (installation & updates) and low cpu overhead.

There is exim, mailscanner and clamav installator available for cpanel. Free solution and complete satisfactory for most of us.

Mailscanner/clamav works great with exim. Like piraha said there is an auto installer for cpanel that works pretty good. Personally I use a customized version but the cPanel one will work decently for most people.

or use Exiscan (part of Exim .34)

has any one used the Exiscan+Clam+Exim Autoinstaller on cpanel box running the lastest stable release w/lastest Exim ?? Any problems ??

That version can be resource intensive at times but it works great. Just make sure your server has some extra power, do not install it where the loads are already high.

this would be on a DELL Dual 2.0 Xeon processors w/1 GB DDR Ram w/RAID5 (3)73GBHD's RH7.3 w/Cpanel lastest Stable tree and Exim.

Normally we don't run very high loads, avg about 2-3 CPU's at peak times ,but rarely above 2. The majoirty of the clients on this machine rely heavly on their email services, so email is critical icon_smile.gif

Would you see a problem using it on this type of setup.... just read too many headaches w/Clam & MailScanner icon_smile.gif

Me. Works great icon_smile.gif

Nope go ahead and run it. If there are any problems there is also an uninstall script included. You might even look in the mailscanner config to tweak it a bit, you can make the mailscanner more/less sensitive. The only real headaches are the load problem but you have a good server to prevent that from happening icon_smile.gif

are you running the lastest Cpanel/Exim stable releases ?? According to the docs, this has only been tested on Current build.

That package would together months ago, if you look at the docs you might be able to find an exact date.

thx's eth00, appreciate the info... may give it a try.

One thing I seem to recalling reading tho, is if a "web hosting" company offerring Antivirus scanning for their customers and a virus is picked up by a customer and damages their computer, the "web hosting" company could be held liable. Has any one read or have any info on this... is this a possible draw back to offering antivirus scanning on one's machine to their customers ?

You can setup the AV to just remove the virus and still forward the email. That way they know they got one and if it was not a virus you can still recover it from the server (you being the admin). So far I have yet to recieve a virus inside of an email running this suite from cPanel.

I'm running it with:

WHM 9.4.0 cPanel 9.4.1-R55
exim (exim-4.34-60_cpanel_stmpcontrol_antivirus_rewrite_mailman2_mailtrap_exiscan)

Are those the latest? Don't know, but I hope so icon_smile.gif
Akai25
exim-4.34-60_cpanel_stmpcontrol_antivirus_rewrite_mailman2_mailtrap_exiscan

Works very good! icon_wink.gif
