Full Version: Any hope for 5.X?

I've been wanting to move a few of my RH 7.2 servers over to (bigger, faster) FreeBSD boxes, but I'd really like to go with 5.x. I realize I can roll the dice with things like depenguinator, but I'd rather have some kind of supported install. Is there any hope of this happening soon?

I've worked with FreeBSD for a few years and due to problems a couple of years ago with some of the better priced BSD hosting providers I resorting to using Redhat and Ensim.

Needless to say I've had enough of Redhat and hate RPMs even more and would LOVE to convert my services to FreeBSD.

Now, preferrably, I would like to use 5.x as I believe this to be production ready now as 5.3R is almost there.

Has anyone managed to install FreeBSD 5.x on an EV1 server? If so, could they explain (or be paid to do it?) how as my lab-tests upgrading a 4.10 server to a 5.2 or 5.3 (without a format) on any server has been unsuccessful (make installworld panics, etc).

Before you ask, 5.x has better native jail functionality and a quicker file system (UFS2) that would be very nice; particularly for having a long-term, reliable, hosting solution.

Now that we have temporary console access to the servers, is it possible that a boot CD be put in place?

Kind Regards,

TechBrat
