Full Version: HOW TO: Upgrade mysql 4.0.x to 4.1.x?
The Planet Forums > Control Panels > cPanel/WHM

Hey peoples this one has been troubling me for some time, and i still cant seem to find it anywhere on the Forums, i hear the last stable release was mysql 4.0.17

After running cPanel upgrades and re-building apache via the WHM 100's of times i still cant manage to get mysql past the 4.0.15 stage? mysql have 4.1 series plastered all over the site and websites i have read say that it has VAST improvments!

Has ANYONE figured out a way to get this mysql 4.1 working on their server with cpanel?

IF SO? HOW!? Is the mysql update not automated like the rest of the software?

Thanks to everyone who replies!

afaik cpanel hasn't updated to the newer versions yet

4.1 is BETA.
4.0.17 can be installed using RPM. Find suitable for your OS and install it through sheel. If you have problems acessing phpmyadmin after that use the reset mysql password (or something like this) option in WHM.

I know ppl which updated their MySQL this way and have no probs.

Timdorr is one of the makers/supporters of NeoWin and a PHP programmer so I believe his word icon_smile.gif But different systems may react different, you know.

I have not upgraded mine, because I'm a bit afraid too. So I am waiting for cPanel to update it.

When I see something that says beta I generally try to avoid it if its a major system daemon. It might work fine for some people but thats why its beta, the developers are not sure if it will work good on all systems and types of machines. That being said without people testing they cannot tell...so test away and then when they release the final I can feel a few less bugs in it, possibly due to your testing icon_biggrin.gif

This thread finished in February. MySQL 4.1 is stable now and is rapidly improving.
Is there a way to upgrade to MySQL 4.1 on a server with CPanel.
How will CPanel work with it?

It runs stable enough but you have to watch out for the problems with upgrading. It is very possible you will break some website in the upgrade process. Make *SURE* that you backup all of your mysql information before you do the upgrade. The physical upgrade almost always go smoothly it is just some sites that are older may have trouble.

Thank you for the answer, John.
But my question is different.
I have a new server where I plan to start new sites and import old databases. I think I will be able to handle this because there is a plenty of documentation on migrating from 4.0 to 4.1.
But I haven't found answers in CPanel/WHM documentation:
Does CPanel work correctly with MySQL 4.1?
Did anyone upgrade to MySQL 4.1 on a server with CPanel?
And in what manner does CPanel and programs that it uses (exim for example) work with MySQL?

Look inside of tweak settings, there is an option to have cPanel automatically install mysql 4.1 for you. It will work fine, I have done it on a lot of servers.

Thanks a lot.
That's exactly what I was looking for.
