Full Version: Firewall locks up server

Hi,

I installed visnetic firewall on 2 win servers that I got at the same time about a month ago.

The rule sets are identical for each.

1 server works fine, the other has the following problem.....

Since yesterday, whenever I try to start up the firewall by clicking on the desktop icon, or any other method, the server stops responding to the remote desktop. The screen turns black and white except for a small box that opens in the top right corner that shows an image of 2 computers. (I attached a screenshot of this - a jpeg image). The RD screen freezes and I can then no longer connect remotely to it, however I can still ping the server.

Not only that but after EV1 rebooted, the server still did not respond to remote desktop - neither myself nor EV1 could log in via it. The techs had to attach to the server to get it back online.

The part I really feel bad about is that it has now happened twice in the last 12 hours (I tried after each time to fix the problem but the same thing happened over again), causing EV1 to send a tech to physically connect to the server. Now it just happened again!, so I'll be asking the techs to attach a 3rd time within 20 hours.

Does anyone know what is causing this to occur???
LighthousePoint
that means that RDC (TCP:3389) is blocked in your firewall config. Re-run the config, allow RDC, and reboot.

Thanks for responding...

RDC had been allowed in the configuration, but it was blocked for a different reason.

Just incase this happens to someone else, after many tech reboots and contact with Visnetic the problem was very simple.

I had installed the 30 day trial of the firewall, however did not pay for it right away b/c this was my first attempt at using Visnetic and I wanted to try it out for a while.

The problem is this...

After 30 days, the firewall stops working and you will recieve a message box that asks for the registration information.

The problem is that if the 30 day trial is up, when you click on the desktop icon it automatically closes all ports for security and then asks for a registration key to continue using the firewall. Since it closes all ports, it also disconnects remote desktop.

To fix the problem, you can do the following:

1. Get EV1 to reboot the server and disable the firewall.

2. Go to the Visnetic website and purchase the software (you are given a registration key for the firewall).

3. Uninstall the Visnetic firewall currently on your server using the Add or Remove programs feature in the control panel.

4. Reinstall the software. During the install wizard you will be asked for the Registration Name and Registration Key, enter the ones given to you after purchasing the software.

5. After completing install, you will have to restart the server. Then click on the Visnetic desktop icon. This will cause the remote desktop to freeze (this is normal after installing the software) as listed in the How-To guide also on these forums. Disconnect from the server, then reconnect via remote desktop.

6. If you click on the Visnetic icon it should work properly again.
