Is anyone else having trouble logging in as root to phpmyadmin? Here is what I see after attempting to change the root MySQL password via WHM:
QUOTE
ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)'
However, using cPanel, users on that server CAN connect to phpmyadmin with no issues. It just seems to be ROOT that can NOT login or run MySQL commands as ROOT.
Geezzzz... this is CRAZY and ANNOYING!
THANKS!

Thanks for the reply... But that is part of the problem. I cant change the root password at all.
I tried two ways....
QUOTE
root@neptune [/]# mysql -u root mysql
ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)
root@neptune [/]# mysql
ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)
root@neptune [/]#
Attempt #2:
root@neptune [/]# mysqladmin -u root password new
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)'
root@neptune [/]#
I know there are other ways, but using the above two and WHM and directly editing my.cnf, none of the foru are working so there has to be something else...??
Thanks

errrr.. I might add, that when in WHM, it gives me the error that "cant connect.. password YES..." but if I look directly at my.cnf, the NEW password is indeed there.

please go to
www.mysql.com and lookup "reset password". There's a link that deals specifically with resetting a forgotten password, and none of what you've done is that procedure.

I dunno....
I tried what was listed at
http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Resetting_permissions.html
but still get the error:
ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)
What is REALLY funny is that a ticket I put in with cpanel just got a reply... they said you CAN NOT login as 'root' to phpmyadmin

That is true, the version that comes with cpanel will not let you login as root. I installed another copy of it so that I am able to login as root. They did that because most people do not need to be playing around with it.
"Installing" phpmyadmin is a matter of downloading, unziping and opening in a browser. There is one error that comes up and it points you to the one variable you have to change in the config and your done.

Maybe I am not using the default version, but I could login as root before.... On the LEFT side, there was a drop down menu with all accounts / databases, and from the main frame, I could do certain tasks for accounts.
But, if it was not the default version given by cPanel, who installed it? I didn't.... and who suddenly UNunstalled it????

Oh ok, well maybe they allowed it in later version. I know that I just setup another version so I could login as root and have just always done it that way.
When you did that guide from mysql.com did you get any sort of errors? I have done it that way many times and never had any trouble. Maybe try resetting the pass in WHM again?

I have tried everything that I know. Each time I even TRY to access MySQL as root I get the same error:
ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)
Even when I use SSH or WHM, it dosent matter. Like I said, in WHM, when I try to reset the MySQL password, I get the above error althought it DOES update the my.cnf file in /root/ I just see the above error and continue to get the error each and every time I try to access MySQL as root
I am running 2.5.2, which I guess is cPanel's stable version.
