Full Version: Migrating to new RHE cPanel Box

As I wait for the updated RHE/cPanel image to be available Monday, I thought I would ask for help.

I currently have a RH 7.3 box with cPanel and have purchased a new box to move to. I'd like to have the box all set up and ready to go and just move my clients onto it when done.

Can someone write a "how to" for doing these things:

1) I would like to keep the same hostname

2) I would like to keep the same DNS names (ns1.mydomain.com)

3) When I have the new box secure, updated and ready to go with all of my client accounts moved to it, I would like to just update the IPs at my registrar and when everything propogates..... VOILA everything works. (wouldn't that be great?)

I was trying to do these things with the "flawed" image that came on the new server but I was having problems because cPanel kept telling me things like:
"NS1.MYDOMAIN.COM is already assigned to IP 123.321.123.321".

I know that this stuff can be done. I've seen people change servers without their users even seeing a burp.... its just that I don't know how to do it.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Can anyone PLEASE give me some guidance on this issue? I would like to have all of my customers on the new server ASAP with as little downtime as possible.

Thanks.

Wouldn't it be easier to backup via cpanel, mount the main drive as the slave, load RHE and restore?

No messing with DNS and name servers?

There were a lot of reasons to get a new server.....

I needed more IPs and the subnet I was on was full and I was going to need to move anyway....

I needed a beefier server and with all the upgrades (memory, etc.) I was paying for, I am getting a bigger better server at a lower cost.....

I can fortify a new server (APF, Antivirus, etc.) without live traffic on the server.....

I figured that by doing things this way I could cut down on downtime by having all my clients on the new server and just wait for the IPs to propogate.

It just made more sense to me to attempt to have a healthy server running and not put any of my clients in jeopardy while I upgrade to RHE.

Ok, that makes more sense, I thought you were just wanting to upgrade a cpanel server to RHE.
