Quote from Headsurfer in thread above:

"Effective 1/1/04, our Preferred linux OS will be Red Hat Enterprise. As of that date, all new plain Red Hat servers will come with this OS at no additional charge. "

Headsurfer, do I understand correctly from your quote that I get Redhat Enterprise at no additional charge after 1/1/04.

I bought a Xeon server today 1/6 and was suprised to find it still had Redhat 9. How do I get this free update?
AaronC
We are currently offering a service via the members section where you can get Redhat Enterprise, FreeBSD or Plesk for Redhat Enterprise on your system.

There is a small charge related to this service upgrade.

Also, per this forum post , new servers with these configurations should be offered Monday.

this doesn't affect me in any way, but I have to just say that I think he should get the OS upgrade for free. the planned date for RHEL was 1/1, but it wasn't really announced that it would be delayed until today. he ordered the server thinking it would have RHEL per the most current announcement.

jd, you must have got me at a sentimental moment, cause I actually feel bad for you

in all likely hood your going to have to pay the 60$ for the restore, look at it this way, there was no setup fee, so your still making out.
HeadSurfer
With all due respect, the current OS was listed on our site prior to purchase. Upgrades require a small OS restore fee. There will be an announcement shortly regarding OS migration paths and the dates on which each SKU will make the change to Enterprise.

We have been delayed a few days on making all of the changes. This is one of those situations where looking at our site or asking the sales department would have been the right thing to do.

Also, you shoudl understand that we also delayed implementation of a $149+ setup fee on the Dual Xeons servers that had been planned for late in December but we had held off on implementing.

All in all you saved a TOn of money.

With that said, contact OSC@ev1.net directly .. not throuigh the forum.. and he'll see how he might be able to help you.

I had ordered this server thru the member area. Every Plain RH 9 on the front page of the site was "sold out" and but I saw this Xeon in the member area listed only as "Redhat" not "Redhat 9".

Since no more RH 9 servers were available and I saw this "Jan1 " announcement in the forums I assumed that this was a RH Enterprise server and grabbed it.

I guess I should have checked a little more carefully before purchasing a server icon_wink.gif

I should have been a little more understanding. The last few weeks have been a time crunch challenge.

Contact Mario and he'll make you happy. I promise. (At least he better icon_smile.gif )

Priority Red Hat Enterprise Re-image - Primary Drive Install $129.00 One Time Fee
EV1Servers will restore the primary drive to Red Hat Enterprise and mount your existing drive as slave so that you can access the data on it. It is still recommended that a backup of data is made prior to ordering this option. Note: the slave drive only stays in the server for 7 days. This process is generally completed within 12 hours of ordering (this timeframe is NOT guaranteed).

What if you have 2 drives? Does RS put in a 3rd drive with RHEL?

If you request the new drive as secondary, yes, the drive will be added as a 3rd drive.

Sorry if this has been disclosed, but I can't find it. What version of RHEL is RS providing?

TIA

Thanks Headsurfer,
Your guys are top notch...
and thanks to Mario and Curtis

For those that are asking about versions:

[root@plain etc]# cat redhat-release

Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon)

[root@plain etc]# uname -r
2.4.21-4.0.1.ELsmp

Is it possible to get this upgrade for Cpanel users?

What if you want the 3rd drive as primary? Do the 2 current drives become secondary? If so, I assume 1 drive gets removed later. How does ev1 decide which one to remove?

New RHEL drive = primary master
old primary slave would stay as is
old primary master -> secondary master

so when 7 days is up, they just remove the secondary master.

Yes please also answer this would need to know also how would we get the data off the 2nd hard drive is there an easy way to transfer it?

We'll work with you on however you want to configure the drives as long as you specify it in your upgrade ticket.

This page should help answer any questions you have about EOL for RHEL:

But the short answer, is maintenance support will be provided for 5 years.

Hopefully this is in the right area.

I've tried to follow the OS migration discussion, however, things went haywire the last couple of weeks and I have missed some of the info. Trying to catch up is causing data overload on the brain, so I'm getting to the point where even simple stuff doesn't seem to make sense.
I'm in a situation probably more common than not - I have a server, but put very little into it. I got it to where I wanted it, and host only my accounts (not a reseller), so I was happy. Now the change has thrown a wrench into things. Maybe I just need a "dumbed-down" version to avoid excessive brain-strain (which seems to happen quite often). A few questions:

I run CPanel with WHM.

1. Would RHE or FreeBSD be best with CP and WHM?
2. Will CPanel run on BSD? (I've heard conflicting reports)
3. Is there a time limit to upgrade before the $49.00 fee is increased?

And, for those who have already undergone the migration:

4. Will any MAJOR changes have to be made to files to ensure that the hosted sites are up and running with no problem after the upgrade to RHE?
5. Did EV1 notify you after the migration was complete so you could start moving sites to the new disk, and did WHM and CP transfer with all the sites intact, or did they have to be recreated?

Sorry if this seems simple - some of us just need it that way.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Dr. Erwin...Make any headway as to the system you will eventually choose?
Fedora vs RHEL vs FreeBSD

I presonally will probably go with RHEL. At least having 5 years with it seems pretty stable as far as the time. And of course the updates coming from ev1 doesn't seem that bad either.

Good Luck with your decision! icon_biggrin.gif
