I am not using up2date, so I retrieved the RPM (kernel-2.4.20-24.9.i686.rpm) from redhat network. I ran it and the followng occured

---------------------

Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:kernel ########################################### [100%]

stdin: is not a tty
stdin: is not a tty
stdin: is not a tty

---------------------

It then hangs (no prompt).

I was told to check my /boot directory for certain files
The file initrd-2.4.20-24.9.img is missing

.. I am not using up2date because it says I need to register, which I have done multiple times..

What should I do??!!

Guy,

You have RedHat 7.2 and want update to a kernel for RedHat 9 ?

You should've used 'rpm -ivh' instead of 'rpm -Uvh' when installing.

Also, you need to use 'kernel-2.4.20-24.7.rpm', *NOT* 'kernel-2.4.20-24.9.rpm'.
That last number before the '.rpm' tells you what version of RedHat the RPM is designed for, and you installed the RedHat 9 RPM instead of the RedHat 7.2 one.

If you can still access the system, use 'rpm -ivh' to install the 7.2 version of the kernel, modify your /etc/lilo.conf accordingly (use the HOW-TO's on this forum!!!), and then reboot.

If you can't access the system... request a restore and ask them to mount your current drive as slave for 48 - 72 hours so you can recover your data.
