Full Version: nameserver setup...moving from rs nameservers?

I've got about 20 active clients on my cpanel box and have been using rs nameservers up to this point. Last week I ordered 2 more IP's and put in the nameserver request with godaddy. I then put in a trouble ticket with RS to add reverse dns to my new nameservers.

Now I'm unsure what to do. If I alter the nameserver information already in WHM for rs nameservers, will that cause me to loose all my clients?

Help!

Thanks

setup the zones in WHM. Then, switch your domains Nameservers over to your new DNS NS records. Once the switch is complete (72 hours), you can delete the zone with EV1

You'll have ZERO downtime with that method.

so there is no bearing on my clients each having setup ns1.rackshack.net and ns2.rackshack.net with their respected registrars?
I'm just trying to be safe here. My brief understanding is that if they are all pointed to RS nameservers and I change to my own nameservers, my customers domains wont have any direction to point to.

Am I wrong with this assumption?

...and finally, all I need to do to make the change is to input the new nameservers into WHM server setup, run the initial nameserver manager, and then restart BIND?

you would configure the nameservers on CPanel.

Then create all the zones, and records, and such. Then have your clients switch their domains to point to your nameservers. give that 72 hours to propogate, then go into the EV1 members area, and delete the zones there.

You'll have zero downtime following it that way. The key points are to have the DNS zones already configured on your nameservers BEFORE pointing domains to them. Secondly, wait for the domains to get pointed before you delete the EV1 zones.

i followed all the instructions in the How To and everything seems ok. Guess I'll find out in 3 days time.

Question is, I use www.register.com for domain registrar, for my main url i've kept rackshacks DNS as well as my 2 new DNS, shall i delete them now or wait 72 hours and then do it?

In my DNS zone editor I notice at the top is still says NS ns1.rackshack.net. Will these change automatically or will I have to change them?
LighthousePoint
In your zones, you must have YOUR ns records. Likewise the domain's whois should not reference ANY EV1/RS nameservers.
