Full Version: Another email problem

I've read of the other Exim problems people have posted here but none answered my question. I've been using the same email address for the last 5 months I've had this server and its always worked fine. The other night I tried to send an email and it wouldn't send. I can receive emails fine. I tried other accounts that I had added in cpanel and they can receive as well but not send. I haven't changed any settings and I no clue where to look for an error.

The error I get in outlook says "The connection to the server has failed" Port 25, No socket error.

Anyone have any clues?

Ok, the problem just got a little more strange. I asked someone else to try to send an email from that domain and they could send fine. I then set up outlook with their username/pass and I still couldn't send. So I figured it was a setup in outlook or something so I Downloaded another email client and the same thing happened. Rebooted here and nothing is fixed. What would make it impossible for me to connect to the outgoing mail server?

Has your ISP started blocking Port 25? Many of them are starting to do so in an attempt to monitor SPAM. I ran into a similar problem where I can use SMTP on my server but someone dialing up using MSN can't.

Search google for "port 25" for more info.

In WHM under Service Manager you can set "exim on another port" to also listen to a port in addition to port 25 (26 seems to be available.)

Then change your mail program to use the new port for SMTP.

Very good advice, I'll have to remember this should it come up.

Good advice, I think my problem goes deeper, at least now that I just found that out. I tried another email address I have on a completely unrelated domain.. still couldn't send. So I asked someone about it and they said I may have a virus that is blocking port 25. Norton finds nothing and I still have no clue whats going on.

I think you may have misread the above post. Some ISP's have started blocking port 25 if it leaves their own network. Earthlink is one that I know of off the top of my head. Basically it means that you cannot use any standard smtp server except theirs unless you use a non-default port. I have set up my server to use 26 and it works like a charm.

I understood the post. I never got any notification from my ISP that they were blocking ports. I switched the exim port on my server to 26 and it works fine, but my problem is other email addresses I have with some networks I'm a part of. I can't ask them all to change their smtp ports.

Thats not really a problem here anyways since this forum only pertains to rackshack servers. I guess maybe thats the problem though, I'll try it on another computer on my network and see if I have the same problem.

Some ISP's don't tell you, they just block the port and leave you to find out about it. We learned that when a few of our clients started having problems sending mail (same scenario as you describe, no changes made, it just seemed to start happening "out of the blue"). We advised them to send mail using their ISP as the outgoing server, but after reading this, I'll try changing ports and see how things go.
