Cool little marketing ploy - you should have kept it to yourself.

So I could sign up for their smallest account of 50GB a month, and only use 0 bandwidth for a year, and that means that for the 13th month I have 600GB bandwidth? So I could pump some serious traffic into my site? icon_biggrin.gif

Or better yet, just wait out 2 years and use 1.2TB of bandwidth in a month icon_wink.gif.

It's true though... It actually works to the company's interests.

The ploy causes more sales to be made. Then people *think* that they're getting a good deal -- when in reality, this occurs:

1) You never go over your BW, so the additional BW you gain on your quota really never goes to use.

2) You always go over your BW, so there's never any additional to carry over -- and you still pay overages.

3) You get some rollover, but as your site becomes more popular, you use it up and eventually have none left, and pay overages.

This ploy is really only useful to the user under this condition:

They've been a customer for a long time, and have a lot of "roll-over", then their site gets "slashdotted" (or some other tech-equivilant) and they use a lot of BW, really fast. But once the /. wears off, they go back to their regular usage patterns.

And you only get 100 gigabyte of bandwidth... I can see if you are a low volume site that does say 2-10 gigs of bandwidth that this would be a nice deal.. HOWEVER.. look at their prices... about neck and neck with EV1Servers here... who offer 700 gigabyte a month.
Is rollover an option the HS might consider? probably... who knows whats going in his head. I am sure there are some servers here that go over all the time so roll over would not benefit them.. and their site (the one that says rollover) does not say you can CONTINUALLY roll over.. aka beyond 1 month.

if the prices are the same.. and server specs are same, why get "rollover" on a 100gigabyte xfer limit when you can just get 700 and have plenty.. (and if you go over.. upgrade to the bigger package)

It's kind of interesting in that it does allow you to build up a buffer...just in case you do suddenly get hit hard. But, bandwidth is dynamic and building up a static reserve is hardly beneficial over the long term. It's a nifty feature, but hardly justifies the low bandwidth offerings by that company!
