Full Version: Plesk 6 and virus attacks.
The Planet Forums > Control Panels > Plesk

I'm new. But not purchased my server yet. Thinking about one with Plesk 6.

However one thing makes me crazy - will be I protected from virus attacks and will Plesk (or RackShack) update the antivirus software (if any)?

If there are no antivirus (while cPanel has buil-it), what people are doing to prevent some crazy things from happening?

Thanks in advance.

People hire a technician that manages their server for $100/month.

Seems cheetaweb has disappeared, but there are many alternatives out there.
4PSA
These servers are self-managed and you don't have any antivirus. But as MobileUserX said, there are alternatives.

Guys, if it's not in your interest to help newbåes, tell it straight.

I know that these servers are not managed, but I just asked how to prevent virus attacks!

I have no additional money to spend $100 on support, most of the things I'll do by myself - is it shame??

Perhaps you are big guys, but me not. Are you using antivirus software? I'm pretty sure that you do. But why just not tell me what it is?!

Sad...

I apologize. I saw things my way. It takes time to become a server expert and I wouldn't want to manage my own server unless I did extensive testing at home (Plesk lets you do that btw).

So if you have time on your hand and you are willing to learn and spend the next 6 months in a cave, I suggest that you hit the Plesk forum, where you will find Howtos.

But remember, managing a server is not just installing some rpms and setting some alerts. It's a job. If you don't take it seriously, your box will be hacked in no time and your customers will flee you.

No, I am not your father =)

MobileUserX gave you some good advice, 4PSA made a nice advertisment, so there you go... welcome to the forums icon_smile.gif

To chip in: viruses are not something you should be afraid of for your linux server. It would be nice to have some anti-virus software so that you clients don't get hit by all sorts of viruses that get sent to them by mail, that's true.

There are solutions that work with qmail (that's what Plesk uses for mail), but you have to install that yourself.

In any case, since you are asking the questions like you just have, my strong advice to you would be to install a linux system at home and play with it. Get to know it. When you can truly admin that, without using the GUI, install Plesk on top of it. Learn how it changes the administration aspect of things. At the same time, read the Plesk forums, WHT and this forum, learn.

If that's not the path you'd like to take, IMHO hire an admin or drop the idea of running a server...

There are how-to's in this forum for installing clam a/v on a plesk box....I would suggest using that....although I do install it a bit differently then the how-to's do....
another install method can be found at AtomicRocketTurtle

A "virus attack" is not something you'll typically worry about... in fact I'm not even sure what a virus attack would be. On your typical linux server you'll be more worried about installing a good firewall and various other security tools...then implementing a good security policy - like checking routinely checking logs, running chkrootkit, etc. I would guess that most people do not run any full-time antivirus solution, except maybe on their mail server as a benefit to clients, but not to protect the server itself.

These servers are unmanaged, and while that may sound like an "insulting" answer, really it's not. It means that no, rackshack doesn't do jack to maintain your server...you have to do everything. You want to run antivirus? Fine, go get some antivirus software and install it! Think of your RS server as your very own system...just a long ways away.

You have to be in the Pool in order to learn how to swim.

That's what I did. I started with Ensim and learned how this hosting works. update/upgrade/patched, ... be security conscious. Did all by myself by reading, reading, asking even though I don't post much before then, just absorbing and implementing what this forums suggest.

It's hard to name talented individuals here......., THANK YOU ALL !!!!
I learned a LOT from YOU.....

Untill now, I'm still learning, this is not my bread and butter but just my past time . Now I dumped Ensim and moved to Plesk just to test what is it?How does it work?. But always security conscious even though I don't have a paid customer in my server. It will be at least couple of weeks before I'll open my server to the public.

To make the story short, learning and doing it in your own is rewarding but time consuming.

AT LEAST , Have FUN ..

Hi ,
I agree with raman_rb

What will you do when virus attacks which are sending u 1000s of mails ? What will you when hackers attack with DDos (These days I heard that ev1 gives this support of protect Ddos but Im not sure) I got cobalt and everyday Ddos sucks me !

What will you do when one of your customer stats spaming and 1000s of mail returns. Not of all got Xeon P4 servers too many of are celerons...

Newbies asks for this but I see that in this forum so many users are rich people and rich people could give no advice for free.

Dear raman_rb Im new to plesk and I wish I could give you some information but I only found about virus is Dr. Web for 149$ for year. Thats all all advices about money I wish add-ons like antivirus will be freeware like linux soon because we hate windows and they threat us like windows but we are linux!
