Full Version: Need to turn off ASP for everyone on a Raq4i. How?

Hello,

I need to turn off ASP for everyone on a Raq4i. I don't want to use it anymore. I don't want anyone to use ChilisoftASP anymore. I need to keep it from starting back up when the box reboots. I know there must be a way to do this by su -ing to root and taking out some file in some startup directory. But I can't find such a file. Anyone?

Thanks a bunch.

just login to the main GUI for the server and in the CP disable ASP, then check all the sites and make sure none have ASP enabled.. that will kill it as it has done on my Raq4i... Mouse

Thanks Mouse. That's exactly what I've been doin all day.

Again here, wish I'd log this stuff.. As far as I can remember, I did a locate and anything that had chilisoft in it, I commented out the line. I believe this is in httpd.conf and srm.conf... yep.. go into /etc/httpd/conf/srm.conf and pico the file, do a control+w look for chiliasp comment out the two lines that have it in there.. in httpd.conf look for

#LoadModule casp2_module modules/mod_casp2.so and put the comment in the front of it (will not be there) I think then you just restart services

/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd stop
/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start

And you're dialed..

Shoot me if I'm wrong, make a backup of both files before messing with either..

cp httpd.conf httpd.conf.save
cp srm.conf srm.conf.save

That should do it for you, it will not load at boot and will not hog resources and processes.

Shortchililess

Ps.. doing a locate for chili also found an uninstall file.. /home/chiliasp/uninstall Use THAT at your own risk!

now thats getting into some dangerous territory if ya comment out all chiliasp lines, Ive found just turning it all off works well and guarantees that I wont need to restore the server any time soon.. Mouse

Thanks. This is more the kind of solution I was looking for. And I have a near empty raq I can experiment with. I don't think I'll do the uninstall however. My ulsers won't allow it.

Thanks again.

Hummn.. Worked icon_biggrin.gif I read the how to here or somewhere else. If you just turn it off, the module still loads and will be listed in running processes or at least loaded processes.

Not really dangerous, because you're only commenting out something like three lines. If it hoses something, just uncomment them and restart.. fixed.

I think it knocked down the processes by something like 5 or 10 if I'm not mistaken.

I was going to uninstall it but then I figured as soon as I did that, someone who used it would absolutely insist on moving onto my server and paying me large sums of money..

Hey... I can dream...mad.gif

Cool. Thanks. I can't imagine who ever thought Chilisoft ASP was a good idea in a shared environment. As people started to really use the thing on my raq4i, like all of our 5 or 6 hosted customers that was actually using it, I saw nothing but trouble, mostly in the area of those dang casping processes eating up 85% of CPU for long periods at a time. Then of course the server started clicking off under the load about twice per week. THEN, I get a stream of customers who signed up because we had ASP, and they promptly hit us with misery because they could not get their danged Access stuff and other IIs drivers to work with it! Finally I get this guy from Florida calling us 5 times a week telling us he needs a way to setup his own DSN for his ASP routines, and he needs to "...get it done RIGHT AWAY OR ELSE!!!".... Ahggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since we started turning off ChiliASP and quit offering it at the first of the year, life is almost back to what one might call sane around here.

lol JoLs, I agree wholeheartadly, I also run NT and Win2K servers and anyone wanting ASP goes Win32 based or they go PHP, plain and simple, Even to the degree that I setup a Cname based subdomain for them on the NT box if they really need the ASP but want Nix. slightly extra charge but worth it to them to get what they want, and worth it to me to keep server stability.. You're a smart man.

I though about putting on an NT server just for this very purpose, but never even brought it up to my partner. I think I saw an R.Crumb, Zap comicx once where some guy was looking at something on TV and his head suddenly exploded.

If we also had NT boxes to maintain right now, I think this would happen to me. Either that, or my ulser would rip out of my stomach, grow into some huge thing with multiple rows of pointy teeth and eat everyone within five square miles.

Thanks Short.

Last weekend I was checking the server and somehow a "caspng" process was literally sucking 98% of free mem. Tried to kill and just wouldn't let me.
ASP was turned off from the server since new. What was that?
I rebooted and that stopped it.
Next morning I came across this instructions pack.
Excellent ! icon_smile.gif

Just had to go back to comment a line saying ASP-3000 or something like that (apart from the others you said).
Went back and restarted.

Incredible! 2 days later my server has been operating 5° cooler and activity went down from 40s to almost 0%. icon_biggrin.gif
Ah, mysql time process is around 0.002 secs ! (having more than 20 active tables running daily).

Thanks all you for your help.

Ha! Naugh, the only erbs for me these days are from the local Safeway.
Just a graphic artist turned host provider,,,, which is bad enough.

Also - Mouse, thanks for the offer. I may take you up on that someday, if ever I grow a couple more stomachs, like a cow.

Glad the turning off chille worked.. In looking into it further, methinks it would not be that hard to uninstall and might not be a bad idea either.. but.. probably better to leave well enough alone and just knock the beast out rather than pulling him out of his cave and killing the poor bastard.. This way, if we miss.. we can always put things back the way they were

I had ASP running for a while when I first got the Raq, it really messed thinks up a lot and I disabled it.

I never saw any instance of chiliasp running, but I commented out all the lines that Shortfork suggested plus one more.
in the /etc/httpd/conf/srm.conf file, there is one more line:

CaspLib /home/chiliasp/asp-apache-3000 comment it out.

after a restart of httpd, 10 processes are gone.

Thank's as always Shorty

When I posted that I couldn't remember what all I had to remove, so prolly omitted that one. I just did a find with anything that had anything related and tracked em down.. I *SHOULD* start logging what I do though!

Would make things drastically easier if I ever had to move or restore!!

We should probably add these steps to the FaQ..

Shortz..

aye, chili ASP sucks.. between the commenting out and simply disabling it via the cobalts CP all is well on my server and no instances of it at all.. man I gotta quit sleeping during the day, I miss fun filled conversations about erb.. Mouse

NOtes?? Shortforks don't need no stinking notes!!! icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif

LOL.. RU Kidding.. change my ways?? No I actually remembered what needed to be changed.. what threw me was that the damn thing was back...

But what I think it is is just the chile admin server thing.. I notice in my /etc folder I have a cron file saved that indicates that I removed it from cron.. (notes??)

At any rate.. enabling it on a site and then disabling it took it out.. strange but it worked..
