Can I install and run Apache on a Windows server, instead of using IIS? lol... i am just a rebel...
alexexela
If not, is it possible to set IIS to act like apache's rewrite mod?
I am not familar with IIS since I have been using Apache all my life..
Thanks

I guess what I am really asking is... can I install custom applications on Windows 2003 Web Edition?

I can't see why you couldn't. A firewall is a must, how could they refuse to allow you to install that? Surly Microsoft licencing couldn't get that out of hand! (could it??)

What I really want to know is does the Windows servers come with solitaire?

Light it up!

Here is a great article, note that it is native and not a unix port in ver 2.

Don't get me wrong, I'm gonna keep smokin' IIS.

So basically I can use Remote Desktop Control to install Apache 2.0 in Windows 2003 Web?

Apache works fine on Windows (i use Windows for my development, which i then run on Linux in production). I'd recommend using Apache 2.0 though (especially for Windows icon_wink.gif )

I am trying to decide between Windows 2003 Web or Standard. So I guess I can install Apache and MySQL on either of them eh...
LighthousePoint
Yes, Apache and MySQL can be used on either.

On a sidenote, however, Apache will not perform as well as IIS in most situations (on a Windows2k3 box)

I've currently got both IIS and Apache 2 running on my server on different IP addresses - works perfectly!

To get IIS stop hogging all the IP addresses on your server, make sure you explicitly specify the IP address for all your IIS sites then see this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...Ben-us%3B813368

If you want the support tools, a Rackshack engineer will put them on your server if you submit a trouble ticket, or you can PM me and I'll send them to you (10MB).

And remember, Rackshack will give you the extra IP address for free if you haven't used more than eight yet.
