I think my zone file for the nameservers is messed up.

Can somone post a sample of a good ns1 zone record ?

Try running
/scripts/fixndc

there is no real "ns1 zone record" if you think its corrupt and the script does not work just delete it and try again. Modifying the named files outside of cpanel almost always leads to trouble it seems.
