This nice (free) utility offers a fair amount of information about the hardware of the server. I have had no issues running it on my RS server.

MBM is also good if you want that kind of info:

WCPUID:

This tool is hands down one of the best hardware imformation tools....

AIDA32 does what all those programs do, and more:

AIDA is really nice on RS servers so you can ID everything that is on your rented box. A must if you're going to be installing low level stuff like MBM that might crash your box and prevent it from restarting (if you forget to check things like 'don't start on startup). It also has a command line option for generating reports and can run without and user interface.

Not too sure if it is related or not, but I have been living a nightmare thepast 18 hours.

I just signed up for a Windows Server 2003 Web Edition Server and was in the process of configuring the software I need on it, when I decided to install AIDA.

After installing it and trying to start the program, my remote Desktop session froze and kicked me out. I tried logging back in to see what was happening but it wouldn't connect

I requested a server reboot, which the DC could not do either. It seems when trying to boot into windows the server was giving an error and crashing again. Even in Safe mode they coudl not do anything.

Here's what they said the error was:

Your server commits a GPF (error 0x00000050) right after you login and the server either reboots or hangs at the blue GPF screen. We found Microsoft Technet article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;832269 stating that Microsoft has a hotfix for the issue, but unfortunately, the server will not stay online even in Safe Mode to try to apply the hotfix.

Please order a restore online through the member’s section and please specify whether you need your original master hard drive left in the system for 48 hours to recover your data. When we restore a server, unless it is a Dell Dual Xeon server, we take the master hard drive out and replace it with another. We will leave your old master drive in the system as a slave for a maximum of 48 hours as a courtesy to you free of charge upon your request. Please note, that Dell Dual Xeon drives are formatted and imaged over unless you specifically request that your drive be saved, at which time we will swap your secondary drive, if available, with your primary drive for imaging.

It seems after trying a system restore the first hard drive they tried was boot cycling, so they tried with a second one and it worked fine.

I think to myself, "GREAT! I'm back in business."

NO!!

I can;t log into my server still using Remote Desktop. It gets to the blue screen after logging in but no icons appear and no startmenu/task bar.

After a few more hours of support chat sessions and trouble tickets, they tell me to request another system restore. This is where I am at right now.

VERY FRUSTRATED TO SAY THE LEAST!!! mad.gif

Did I pick the right hosting company to come to or is my server just happen to be a lemon!?!?

Is it related to the AIDA software or was it just a fluke that the crash happened whilei was trying to start it?

Anyone else had problems with AIDA software?

Thanks for hearing me out as I vent!

I would not have expected AIDA32 to even remotely do this. I use it in large production networks without issue.

A clean restore should have corrected everything. I would ask for a second restore and hopefully it is on the house.

They did waive the charges for the first restore. Since this second restore was caused by a faulty first restore, I am assuming that they will waive the charges on this one as well.

After a bit of research, I looked over the AIDA website and found this in there FAQ:

http://www.aida32.hu/aida32-faq.php?id=2

Now, it was 12:30 AM last night when the server froze on me so my memory may not be 100% on this, but the last thing I recall seeing on the screen was the AIDA logo screen displaying "Scanning PCI Devices" I am almost positive this is the point that it locked up on me. I have never used AIDA before so I don't know what happens each time you start the application? Does it do a search on the Hardware and software on the PC/Server?

In any case the point it froze up was as the above link mentions, and I also saw the little AIDA icon in the bottom right task bar.

If those two files are the culprit files, why would it have caused the GPF error that I mentioend in my previous post?

In my opinion something else is wrong with the server as well, because, even after they ran a system restore and put a new master hard drive in, the server still had problems booting into windows.

I am puzzled!!

OK, now EV1 ended up replacing the server fo me after having "technical issues" when trying to swap out just the hard drives.

As I suspected my server must have had "other" issues that were causing problems.

Now the final question is.......

Do I attempt once again to install AIDA32 Enterprise Edition or do I just leave it be and don't ask for trouble on my server!?!?
