great news!
quick question to all of you using Plesk:
will you update immediately or will you wait till several issues, of which i read in plesks forum (backup/restore utilities aren't avaible for plesk6 yet), are resolved?
I think i'll wait a bit till everything smoothened.

I'm going to wait it out... I want to see what happens over the next couple of months before I take the plunge.
I do have Plesk 6 on a machine at the office to do testing on and it seems pretty nice.

Are the plesk keys corresponding to the current license? I have recently upgraded to the unlimited domains, so it means that the new key will be for unlimited domains too?

Hows should we proceed to tell support to upgrade our Plesk 5 machines to Plesk 6? Also, will Red Hat version stay the same?
Thanks!

Our new Plesk 6 servers are imaged with Redhat 9. If you use the free upgrade option you will get the liscense key from Rackshack and install Plesk yourself, so it will have whatever version of Redhat you install.

So I assume there will be a paid upgrade opton to include RH9?

Ya, but re-imaging usually costs money (a restore) so I think Giant wants to know if upgrading to RH9 (which will require a re-image) will cost the same amount as a restore.
Kinda wondering about that as well, seeing as RH7.3 seems to go EOL.

This implies that there will also be a paid upgrade option - and the paid option will relate to the verion of redhat.
Otherwise why mention a free upgrade
option?
I guess we will have to wait until tomorrow to find out the options open to us
Seems to me that it might be easier to cancel the existing server, and take out a new one with RH9 / Plesk 6.
Thanks.

Since it is RH9, what version of Apache will the new Plesk6/Dell Xeon servers be running, 2.0.x or 1.3.x?

I think if you do a restore that the image will be plesk 6 and RH 9. You'd have to pay for the restore though.
I just upgraded my server, went from a celery to a p4. figured the extra 30$/month was worth it with the $1 setup fee.

Quick Question - I assume this is the basic Plesk - as the offer by Plesk to include the tomcat and bits like that free expired last week.

Jul 23 2003, 04:20 PM
At this time all we are offering is the PSA 6 license install, this is free of charge. We will not be offering a re-image at this point as we do not have a master image for every kind of server we have as of yet, we will notify you when this is done, but at this time we only have a master image for the servers we sell it new on. Any re-images except for those will be done to PSA 5.0.

I am moving to a new server on the 29th of this month. What are the chances that it'll be RH9 and Plesk 6???
Ahh, hang on...I see from the order page that they are Plesk 6. However, the regular Redhat version is still 7.3. Should I assume that the Plesk 6 servers will be running on RH9? I believe that's what was implied earlier in the thread...just making sure.

What does the upgrade process entail?
I'm guessing it's fairly straight forward.
Has anyone updated php via atomic rocket turtles rpms? Know if having done this will cause problems with the plesk 6 upgrade?
Edit: do we receive the license file/binary and we run it, or do they do all that for us?
Regards

I don't think they trust us peons with the .sh file ^^
But yeah, it seems that they'll just install it then delete the .sh when done.

It's not a problem to upgrade current Plesk 5 installations to Plesk 6. The procedure is safe and involves only several minutes of downtime.

In your opinion, is it safer to use the autoinstaller or the manual upgrade?

Jul 24 2003, 04:31 AM
Seeing as Rackshack will install the new key for you, this means you would have to do the update and then wait for Rackshack to install the key. This might take a few hours while your request is queued. In the mean time your sites are all down on that server.
Is there a way that one can get the key installed as soon as the update is done ?

My plesk6 key is installed and what I sayed here:
http://forum.rackshack.net/showthread.php?...2498#post172498
no tomcat, no plesk-event-manager-module, no postgres-support with installed key.
Only: This feature is currently disabled because your license-key does not support it
And now???
wingfan5
Jul 24 2003, 08:08 AM
You have to buy those features as of July 12th.
A couple of weeks sooner and we would have gotten a great deal!
Oh well no big deal anyways.Right?
Peace
DataFlame
Jul 24 2003, 08:28 AM
Actually that is a big deal. If you start having to pay for these add-ons, $50 each, so $150 per server, and then times that by 7 or 8 servers it is a lot of money.
2nd point, how can we add on these extras when we do not own the key directly.
Hopefully we will not go through the same problem when the PSA 5.x key came out, as we had to go and buy a lot of private keys.
wingfan5
Jul 24 2003, 08:46 AM
Actually it will cost a total of $300 for those features per server.
Gentle Giant
Jul 24 2003, 09:30 AM
That is sad - considering Rackshack promised the upgrades would come almost straight away - then Plesk said if you upgrade within a certain timeframe you would get the extras free - yet when it came down to it - Rackshack delayed and the free extras were lost.
Is there anything that can be done RS?

Jul 24 2003, 09:57 AM
The keys are rackshacks, they may not have the same deal with plesk/swsoft that a regular customer would have.
(Volume licensing and all)
The "free upgrades" may not have been an option for them at any time, let alone during the timeframe that customers were given that opportunity.
I'm glad they took a bit more time to make sure all was cool with plesk 6 on their systems before saying "have at it".
smack
Jul 24 2003, 09:58 AM
This is obviously a special license contracted under a special arrangement. There's no reason to assume that we would have gotten the enhanced features even if RS had gotten the license a month ago.
DataFlame
Jul 24 2003, 10:01 AM
This may be the case but this does leave us slightly knackered. If we do not own the licences we cannot upgrade to the add-ons. Therefore the PSA6.x licence with Rackshack is limiting.
smack
Jul 24 2003, 10:05 AM
Agreed...but we are getting Plesk for cheap (well, in a way). The obvious alternative would be to get a Redhat server and buy your own Plesk, which many of us aren't willing to do.
Don't get me wrong, I am disappointed too...version 6 isn't really anything to sing for joy about (aside from the sweet 3D buttons, heh), and taking away these important features makes it even less attractive. It's definately a bummer.

Ok, I've been lazy... I haven't upgraded from Plesk 2.5 yet.
My question: could I skip the 2.5 -> 5.0 and just go directly from 2.5 -> 6 when it's available?
Would it be something RS would/could do or would I need to do it? all of it or just part of it?
Any info would be appreciated!
(then again, maybe I'll just get a new box altogether, transfer all the data, and ditch the old. hmmm)

also when plesk 2.x was out they were using shell scripts to install plesk now its all rpm you'd really do best to back up and get a restore first.
