Hi! Tried searching the forum but could not find a clear answer to my problem. I hope somebody could help me on this.

I have an account (olddomain.com) as a reseller from another cPanel server (not RS) and am using my own name servers.

Recently got a dedicated cPanel server from RS and used a new domain name (newdomain.com).

PROBLEM:

1.> is it possible to use my old domain name and name servers on my new server? can i still change the setup bec new server is currently using my new domain name and new nameservers. How will I do it?

2.> how can I transfer clients from the old server to my new one without downtime using the old domain name (olddomain.com) and name servers (ns01.oldnameserver.com and ns02.nameserver.com)? Should I transfer the accounts first before changing the DNS settings?

MY THOUGHTS:

1.> Inform RS that I want to change the domain name that I registered with them.

2.> Copy accounts from the old server to the new one.

2.> Go to my domain registrar (olddomain.com) and assign the IP address given to me by RS.

3.> change the name server settings in my new server and use the old ones (the ones used by my existing clients as I do not want to bother them by asking them to change their name servers from their registrar.)

*by this time, I have 2 domain names (old and new) using a single IP address assigned by RS. Is this possible?

Am really not sure if the above would work..

Thank you guys in advance for your help!

If you really want 0 downtime you could do something like this

1) On new server move EVERYTHING over and have it all setup
2) Make redirect pages for each domain (yea I know its a pain...) that goto http://ip.of.new.server/~username/
3) Change ns1/ns2 to point to yuor new server and the new ips
4) Wait 72 hours then you can disable your old server.

Depending on the number of domains this could be a pain, but would be able to get the move done with no downtime. Make sure and tell the clients to connect to ftp on a different port. The one issue I can see would be mail, you might try setting up the mail server to redirect all mail to your new server. Other then that should go ok.

Well, if it's the only way then that's what I'll do. Thanks for your help!icon_smile.gif

If you host your own dns could also point all the dns records to the new server. Usually DNS cache for actual resolving does not last too long so most clients would jsut go right to the new server. Of course some isps cache this data so would still want/need the redirect page on the server...

dns is always fun because its so ssllooww
