I have run into into an issue I am not sure how to deal with. We are moving a Plesk 5 box at another noc to a new Plesk 5 box here at RS.

In retrospect I should have just gave the new box a new hostname, regged the new domain and treated it like any other new box. Then I could have just moved the sites, pointed them at a newly created DNS and deleted the old nameservers once everything was resolving.

What I did though was give the new box the same hostname as the one were moving. I setup the box as usual, including the nameservers and then did a backup on the old one (standard version of Plesk) and a restore on the new machine (rpm version of Plesk). That works great for transferring between the rpm and standard versions BTW, translated everything fine.

About the time I put in a ticket to have RS add PTR records for the nameservers I realized ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com were already operating on the old box and there were PTR records at that noc for the old IPs. Normally I create the nameservers when I register the domain on directnic.com but this domain I had allowed the noc to purchase for me so I had to wait for a transfer to our account before I could work on it. When the transfer went through I see there are no nameservers attached to it, I was planning on just changing the IPs on it or deleting the old and adding the new but as it is now, they don't list them to modify and I can't apply new ones with the same name while the old ones are active.

I know the old noc would not have created the nameservers at the registrar, they did add my PTR recods for me when I requested it though. This brings up another question, apparently creating the nameservers at the registrar on the domain is not required, adding them in Plesk is enough.

In any case, I am not sure how to handle this. I suppose I could still reg a new domain for this new box and change the hostname on it but I hate to do that. There is probably a simple solution to this though, anyone know what that might be? I am tempted to just remove the nameservers on the old box and have them remove the PTR records and see if it will start resolving to the new box but I thought I would try a post here first.
