It depends on how you upgrade. From the language point of view you will have to play with php.ini to make it as backwards compatible as possible.

I didn't have any major problems at all. fopen and fread for remote files broke though... however if you use streams all works fine.

it's failing on me with this error:
" configure: error: Cannot find header files under /usr"
i am running it with these options which i copied from my phpinfo:

Your prefix is the directory containing apache!

hmm, my assumption was that i can actually use the same ./configure options as they did when they installed
apache is under
/usr/lib/apache in plesk 5, right?

Not necessarily sometimes it's copied across from a ghost which was installed differently.
The old standard install of plesk was like that, the directory locations for that didn't exist on the real server.
