backup/restore utilities seem to be delayed till end of july.
Even if we upgrade immediately how are we supposed to backup the server?

hrm..that could be an issue...
although...you could do a psa5.0.5 backup..
the run the plesk6 upgrade...which would convert your sites to plesk6...
now....I havn't tried this yet....but it should work...
of course..that still leaves you without backups of your new plesk6 box for a month....
hrm....gonna have to look into this one..

I'm conserned about the exact same thing. Plesk 6 looks awsome, I can't wait for Cron/Tomcat/Email Level Contol/Postgresql support but at this point I'll wait until I hear how its going to work from an RS upgrade path angle and also I'd much rather have others find all the bugs and problems for me so I'll know what I'm getting into.

I'm told the Plesk backup utilities will be made available within 30 days.

the bugs should basically already been gone....there have been alot of people doing the beta testing of psa6 for awhile now ..(including myself)...and plesk6 (as it's name has now changed to)...does perform very well..even in the beta....

The backup utilities (or lack of) do seem to be the only major "bug" with Plesk 6.

I know..and I am sure they were not really wanting to release it without the backup utilities either...
but....I know they were under alot of pressure (including from me ) to get plesk6 out, to ensure people that this swsoft deal didn't kill psa...
anyway...I wish they backup utilites were out too...after all...the plesk backup utilities are by and far the best way to backup your plesk sites...
and in plesk6...there is even site admin level backups in the plesk cp....

Do you know where to get new license-key?
I found nothing, thread in general-information is unanswered...
Or you know how long we must wait for update?

Direct from Plesk or RS-leased?

Pleask and Rackshack have entered into a three year agreement , one provision of which insures that the latest and greatest version of Plesk will be available to our users as soon as it is released.
If we must pay I change to cpanel

If you got your key direct from plesk...then follow the instructions in swsoft's email:
QUOTE
Upgrading your PSA software to Plesk 6 will require a new license key. =
We suggest that you do this prior to updating your software. To =
streamline this process we have established the e-mail address =
(keyupdate@sw-soft.com) and a template
for you to request your =
updated license key(s). Please cut, paste and send the following email =
to keyupdate@sw-soft.com to request a license key upgrade. SWsoft sales =
will refer you to this address.=20
If you got it from RS....hang on...HeadSurfer will release details as soon as everything is in place..I am sure...

Plesk seem to be charging extra for PostgreSQL and Tomcat support (which is ridiculous really), so I'll be interested to see if Rackshacks "latest and greatest version of Plesk" will include those... I fear it won't.

???? They are ???? ...havn't seen anything about those being paid options....they do list them as options....becuase you do have to install the extra rpm's for them...but I don't think you need an extra key.

well..that is strange....I am betting that basic tomcat/postgress intergration is included in plesk6 as a standard ..and that what you are seeing is something extra...
either way....I guess a quick call to my plesk sales rep will sort that out....I will put it on my to-do list.....(it wont' be a priority...becuase tomcat/postgress is not a priority for me either).

Indeed you have to pay extra for Tomcat and Postgress.

Does PostrgeSQL have much effect on server load like Tomcat does? Or is it just mySQL-like intensive?
4PSA
Jun 27 2003, 09:25 AM
In fact Mysql is more intenssive than PostrgeSQL.

So where does this leave Rackshack users...?
I've posted a new thread about this at the General Comments/Suggestions forum even before I saw this one here...
Let's see if somebody from Rackshack notices and answers...

Although PostrgeSQL and Tomcat are not supported by the standard key license, keep in mind that these add-ons are low priced. I don't know if Plesk will sell them to Rackshack users...

Low priced? How many servers do you have?
Even though it might be conforting to know that something costs $49 and not $499, it's still an additional cost, right....? If we add the new aditional costs together, we see that a fully featured Plesk license now costs over $1000...
This makes some of the Plesk 6 benefits seem less beneficial than they were before we found out about the new pricing. It might also mean that RS pricing for Plesk won't be so appealing anymore. Depending on what licenses will they have, of course - and to this question I have no answer yet.
Apart from that, Plesk 6 rocks!
Which of course doesn't mean we're not evaluating other options as we speak.

If you have a lot of servers I hope that you don't pay the monthly fees only to use them as furniture:). I don't agree with the extra charge idea, but I have to admit that it could have been worst.
