Full Version: not providing glue?

I got this error when I ran a dnsreport on a domain that use my nameservers. Any idea how I can fix this?

WARNING. The parent servers (IFI.UIO.no.) are not providing glue
for all your nameservers. This means that they are supplying the
NS records (host.example.com), but not supplying the A records (192.
0.2.53), which can cause slightly slower connections, and may cause
some incompatibilities with some programs (if the programs are not
fully RFC-compliant). This behavior is allowed by the RFCs. This
will usually occur if your DNS servers are not in the same TLD as
your domain (for example, a DNS server of "ns1.example.co.uk" for
the domain "example.com"). In this case, you can speed up the connections
slightly by having NS records that are in the same TLD as your domain.

Yes it means that your domain is a different top level to your name servers.

For example.

Your nameservers are ns0.yourdomain.com and ns1.yourdomain.com

Your websites that you are providing DNS for is otherdomain.co.uk, otherdomain.com and otherdomain.biz

That error will occur on otherdomain.co.uk and otherdomain.biz but not otherdomain.com as this is in the same top level.

If you wish to avoid this problem - you would need nameservers in co.uk and .biz and use these for the other domains.

If you have ns0.yourdomain.co.uk this is 'glued' to the uk top level.

Having said all the above (which hopefully made sense icon_wink.gif ) I wouldn't worry too much about it. Very few domains are free of warning on dnsreport - look at dnsreport.com for an example icon_wink.gif or a big domain like bbc.co.uk - I would only be concerned if you have red failures.

but..MY nameservers are ns.domain.no, and the domain I run the report on is also a .no domain....

Apologies - reading it again, I noticed that icon_sad.gif

As far as my limited knowledge goes (and I am still lerning like you icon_smile.gif ) I think I am correct is saying....

In that case - what it means is that the no registrar - i.e. the body who look after your no TLD domain names do not recognise the name server - in other words the IP is not 'glued' to domain and registered in their database.

Is the nameservers actually running - i.e. do you have a domain that is visible on the net and solely reliant upon these nameservers - if the answer is yes, then it sounds like a red herring.

where do I find the "check" at dnscheck.com?

my nameservers are up running YES, but the domain, say mydomain.no is registered from another registrar, and their nameservers are .com domains, som mydomain.no use another_registrar.com nameservers, but ns1.mydomain.no and ns2.mydomain.no are registered as nameservers at the norwegian "main registrar"..... does that make any sense? should mydomain.no use ns1.mydomain.no and ns2.mydomain.no as nameservers?
