I would not choose any of them, as they both made me get up like every other morning to restart the box, because they failed with large logfiles. My personal favorite is Urchin for the simple reason that you don't seem to notice it doing it's job at all.

Iv been using webalizer (on ensim tho) and am happy with it.

Yeah, i'm running webalizer currently, no problems (on CPanel), but AWstats looks MUCH nicer... I want to know if it will add or lessen load.

The AWstats web page has some performance data.

In short with DNS lookups any statistics package takes eons to run on large log files. Without it webalizer is a bit faster, especially because it is C and not Perl like awstats.

Personally I use webalizer but awstats is very nice too.
