Full Version: nameserver problem (urgent)

Hello,

Lets jump right in....

I have a client with domain1.com and he would like his own nameservers.

Now, lets say the main nameservers for my hosting account are ns1.host.com and ns2.host.com with IP1 and IP2 (respectively).

I told my client to go to his registrar and create ns1.domain1.com with IP1 and ns2.domain1.com with IP2. Now, I know these are not "true" nameservers, but it simplifies things a lot. Especially with the pricing of IPs at RS...

Is there anything I need to change inside Plesk to get it working?

Also, domain1.com is still on his old host, but he created the nameservers and put another one of his domains on them, which is hosted with us. For some people it is working and others it is not.

Could the problem be that domain1.com must be hosting with us before it starts to working properly?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,

Perhaps you can make ns1.domain1.com and ns2domain1.com Cnames that point back to your name servers. This way, a whois lookup will show ns1.domain1.com, but in reality its justs goes back to you and you do not need to order more IP's from RS. I think this will work, not sure if this is following rfc guidelines though.

The second part sounds like regular propagation time to me. when the move is completed, make sure your client contacts his old host and remove the dns entires from there dns servers.

from what I have heard, (I also do this myself to save IPs) you can give the same 2 ips to many different resellers and have them all work. I.E. I read a post on here of someone who used the same 2 ips for 40 clients!

Just and example:

Your nameservers:

ns1.yourdomain.com - 207.44.220.xx1
ns2.yourdomain.com - 207.44.220.xx2

Clients namervers:

ns1.theirdomain.com - 207.44.220.xx1
ns2.theirdomain.com - 207.44.220.xx2

hope that helps!
