I registered a domain through registerfly.com - actually did a transfer to them - the site of course was up and running w/o a problem b4 the transfer ---- now it has been down for over 1 week ...

I recommend you get all of your domains over to godaddy.com. They sell over the counter domains cheaper than anybody else. They offer this as a loss leader for all of the other services they sell. Just skip these and get the name.

They will even answer the phone. $9.00 for a domain.

As a web host, I have to deal with about 20 or so different registrars. Out of hundreds of DNS changes, and registrations, I have never had a problem.

I dare you to find a better service. I dare you to find it cheaper!

twocows.com and opensrc are real idiots. A lotta people resell through them.

I have been using OpenSRS myself for sometime - and have just opened an account with eNOM - - -

they are very quick to respond to issues - and the cost is much better than GoDaddy.com --- the only thing is it does require an
investment ---

Another vote for godaddy and another slam for registerfly. Registerfly kept applying a lock on a domain after I tried to unlock it.

It's totally easy. First login to your account. Then under Go To: choose 'Domain List.' Click on the domain you want to setup your nameservers on. Click on the 'Domain Host Information' link (it says 'click here to add'). Then just add the nameservers and the IP address.

They really could call the link something more obvious, but otherwise GoDaddy is definitely a great service.

I'm using PowerPipe, they are a resellers from Enom and they are real cheap too. (Around 8 Dollars).

But GoDaddy can also be considered as a TOP registar.

It seems you are going to have to invoke the UDRP that ALL registrars have to follow.

If you cant get your problem fixed via this process and/or they refuse to work with you, they can lose there accreditation which they pay LOTS for. Trust me, you start kicking up dust at ICANN they will listen.

Network Solutions even cowers down to these people. Trust me. Next time you get a domain that "expired" and they refuse to transfer it, invoke this process and see how quickly it gets transferred.

domain registrars aren't public utilities

I am not here to argue something that you believe you are an expert on - I just know that it is known by any company that does business here in NJ that they are subject to many different regulations vs. many other states...

THE PUC & BPU here in the state control most every aspect of many different companies - and not just the "Public Utilities" like the water company, telephone companies, cable companies and the like -

Down came a ruling when a little company called Garden State Cable went into the voice over ip and cable internet business -
their practices were covered under the BPU & PUC ~
all their practices - once this was done - case law was presented when this aspect of their business was challenged -

It was found the "Internet Access" is a "telecommunications service... not one way and general, but interactive and individual" therefore the PUC / BPU as well as the FCC can impose regulations on the service(s) provided.

Although this ruling was in regards to cable companies and their lack of providion open access to their networks - it has led the way for all companies in NJ providing any type of communcations services be it cellular, land line, internet, or even smoke signal to be regulated by the PUC / BPU


When we filed for our incorporation here in NJ - we debated about going to Deleware for a few reasons -
1. cost
2. regulations

We decided to file in NJ - as of course our corporate offices are here, as well as we do not believe the regulations to be anything that would hurt our business model or practices.

If a register change was involved when you transferred the domain to registerfly.com then the Public Internet Registry will lock the domain until the transfer is complete.

A lock will prevent any changes being made to the domain including nameserver changes. As a transfer can take up to 5 days then the domain can be locked for up to 5 days.

I'm not sure why registerfly.com did not inform you of this.

if the site is still using the same server, no changes there ... then this is an issue with the DNS registrar - - -

As an opensrs reseller I am able to request the lock to be lifted right away - - -

why registerfly did not know this,

Concerning GoDaddy:
I use to have big issues with them. Their services were nothing and the client had very little direct control. However, since their overhaul they are great. I only have one domain there but will be placing more.

Concerning the others:
I like stargateinc's control panel better than registerfly's but registerfly does a better job of displaying a due-to-be-renewed-list.


And don't pay any attention to my earlier post in this thread. You may even want to ignore this one.

I was ready to jump into the domain reseller business through twocows.com and ther opensrc thing.

I faxed contracts and everything.

I declined to act on it, because Godaddy provides a better over the counter solution.

A guy even called me on the phone from twocows.com. I told him that you could get a domain from Godaddy for $8.95. Why would I want to pay twocows.com and opensrc $12 or $15 and then try to resell the same thing at double?

My customers are not stupid, they are stupid!

His reply, well if you are seriouslly into the web developing business, you will be stupid, and yes I quote "stupid" to go through godaddy.

I will not rip off my client base by trying to overcharge for a commodity item such as a domain registration. So be it, if I don't get to "resell", that is fine!

I do what's best for my customers, they know that, and I am rewarded at the end of the day!

I deal with Registerfly and GoDaddy on a regular basis. I have had more experience with Registerfly and have only used GoDaddy when helping resellers out with nameservers, etc. I will say this about registerfly, their support has always been rude to me when I have had to call on them for help.

But, to give credit where credit is due, there has been a problem with the .org tld because it's ownership is switching hands (I was told this by a Go Daddy support tech within the past couple of months) so this could be a big part of the problem that you were having. I myself had a .org domain that I wanted nameservers for but I could never register domains with those nameservers because they were valid and then all of a sudden not valid, etc.

So, registerfly support can tend to be goons at times, but they do have a good offering. Especially when you can get domains for $7.25 when you are buying in packs of 25 (I think that's the right number). So...good and bad....

As for Godaddy, I have had positive experiences with support, limited as that experience may be. And they seems to have a good offering. I would recommend them.

A lot of people don't even consider the implications of going through a reseller.

I have had to use the phone for godaddy a couple of times to resolve (pardon the expression) very important issues with transfers of live sites.

Make sure you are dealing with the Top. Make sure that who ever you fork your $7, $8, $9 or in the case of some others $30....

that you have a 800 phone number and that actually pick the thing up.

I got randomly assigned to some registrars when I got into the .biz lottery for names. One guy went to Europe on vacation and didn't respond to emails for 2 weeks.

He's just some small time fart just like me.

What I have done now is sent everyone of these companies an email to sales@....domainname.tld

requesting to have information on their reseller accounts -
this will allow me to put all the info together into a great listing -
and place it here on forums.rackshack.net ~ I think I will do it under a new thread - one that is not so full of my complaining about registerfly.com and their support issues.


I do have to mention that eNOM's support staff is excellent -
they responded to the post here on Rackshack's forums as well as the complaint filed to ICANN and the NJ BPU

:-) not only did they fix the issue - they gave me an apology for the actions of their reseller ~

They provided no excuses - just gave me a promise that the situation would be fixed within 12 - 24 hours ... even followed up with a telephone call and email to let me know that the site was resolving . . .

They answer their telephone as well :-)

Sad, but true.....That seems to be an accurate listing in the above posting for ICANN registrars.

That is as close to the source as you can get now-a-day's...

Last time I checked the wholesale on a domain was about $6 bucks across the board for a .com etc....that is what a Godaddy or another top level company gets it for.

Some of the volume dealers will only make $1 or $2 bucks a year off the registration.

I sure would hate to have a customer account generating $2 a year. This explains why resellers usually like about $15/year or more.....

we also use go daddy to buy domains for our customers. Nothing but positive experiences with them too. I also love the reseller domains that they offer. $99 a year to be a domain reseller and domains cost you like $6.95 a year. The name godaddy uses, can click the link from godaddys main page

I currently do my personal domain registrations thru namebargain.com only 8.88 a yr. (its a register.com branch) and have looked at dotster.. but they want 12 from there a markup.


How flexible is wild west domains. for you as a reseller and for your customers?

Can people's domain registrations be created from the get go with your dns servers?

They will/can provide everything that you need to getgoing, they will even give you the template and allow your customers to search names live on your site and then choose to buy. just like on godaddy. they also process teh credit cards on their annoyomous secure server, so that you dont have to worry about accepting different types of credit cards and what not.
