Full Version: A How-To Guide for a Complete CPanel Box Newbie?
The Planet Forums > Control Panels > cPanel/WHM
Erwin
Hi all,

Let me introduce myself - My name is Erwin, and I'm the webmaster and admin of vB.org - the official hack support forums for vBulletin, the software that runs these forums. I admit I'm completely new with managing my own dedicated server, which is why I'm posting this. I've had managed dedicated server for a while now running my private forums (not vB.org, but another site), but the forums have outgrown the server, so I've come to RS.

I just bought a Dual Xenon box yesterday with RH 7.3 installed, which I just upgraded to CPanel today (I should gone for a CPanel box from the start, but I think they sold out).

While RS is reimaging my box to CPanel, I was wondering whether the veterans here can post some beginner's guidelines as to what to do once my box is ready. Any tips on transferring my forum database and files from my current server to the new one would be helpful. Also, tips on setting up firewalls and making sure the server is secure would be great too. I know there are separate threads all over the place regarding this, but not many that are CPanel specific, and I notice there are no newbie FAQ setup threads, so I thought I would post this.

Thank you in advance, and if any of you need help with vBulletin, let me know. icon_smile.gif Happy Easter!

Erwin.

I asked for the same question about three days ago, and got no response yet, i you have some info, please let me know, send me a PM.

I also bought a Dual Xeon, but not plain, with Cpanel.

Im worried about the security, and read about many firewalls (kiss my firewall, bastille, etc) but im not sure which one is the best for Cpanel users, and what ports should be left open.

Welcome aboard the cPanel/RS group Erwin, I bought myself a P4 cPanel server, just a few days ago. You'll find that people here are very helpful so you've nothing to worry about icon_smile.gif.

Some things to be aware of:
If you change the hostname in WHM, that's not the end of it, there's another 4 files that need to be editted too, to reflect the changes.

Same goes for nameservers, there's files to edit too. cPanel/WHM can be quite buggy in matters like that.

I just did a bit of research, and got this from a thread at another forum, these are the things that need to be edited, in order to change hostname:

cPanel Hostname change
/etc/hosts (to reflect new hostname)
httpd.conf servername
/etc/wwwacct.conf (to reflect new nameservers)
/etc/sysconfig/network
