I just signed up for up2date. I was told to enter the command in SSH

up2date -- register

I did this as root and It came up with the following error.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Error Message:
Abuse of Service detected for server plesk.rackshack.net (1002153076)
Error Class Code: 49
Error Class Info:
You are getting this error because RHN has detected an abuse of
service from this system and account. This error is triggered when
your server makes too many connections to Red Hat Network. This
error can not be triggered under a normal use of the Red Hat Network
service as configured by default on Red Hat Linux.

The Red Hat Network services for this server will remain disabled
until you will reduce the RHN network traffic from your system to
acceptable limits.

Please contact rhn-feedback@redhat.com if you think you have
received this message in error.

I have changed my hostname with Nighthawk's script, but still it says plesk.rackshack.net instead of slush.jaredweb.com?
Where can I change this? Why isn't this working? Any help is appreciated!

I have a Plesk server and used the method in the thread below. It is written for Ensim servers but seems to work fine with Plesk.

It seems that you have not updated your hostname and tried to register with the default one. RH probably sees multiple users (machines) attempting to do the same thing from the same hostname and it thinks its abuse.

I bumped into a different issue.. Registered a server .. fine.

Registered a diff server.. it tells me its registered.
I can log into RH it says its registered.. etc. but running up2date tells me its not registered.. and if I try to register (run registration process again) it tells me it looks like its already registered. lol

Anyone know how to overcome this?

I don't know for certain if it would be related to this but, as I understand RH's free service, it only allows one server per free account. More servers requires a paid subscription to their service.

I know this applies to using the admin pages on their sight to do it, but I am not sure if it applies to running up2date from the server end. But it seems like if they were to limit in one direction they would limit in both.

is your hostname plesk.rackshack.net? If yes, that is your problem. Change the hostname, and run rhn_register again... then it will work...

ops...didn't read the whole thread icon_razz.gif

but.. have you ran rhn_register again? and your hostname is changed now?

I changed my hostname through nighthawks tutorial and script.
On the RH site, they say to enter the command

up2date -- register

when I ran that it comes up with an abuse error (this is the only server I have and I have never done this before) and it say's that plesk.rackshack.net is abusing use. This leads me to believe that my hostname is not really changed..

I configured the following files per nighthawk, should I have changed others?

/etc/hosts
/etc/sysconfig/network

thanks in advance!
GraphicsGuy
Those are the only files I edited. I haven't looked at it but Nighthawks How-To's are good. My guess is there is a space in the wrong place somewhere. Since I have used the following How-To on my Plesk server and it works, I suggest that you try following this How-To letter for letter (except of course for using your server name).

http://forum.rackshack.net/showthread.php?...&threadid=10744

Very important - use tabs (not spaces) where it says and when you are finished make sure your cursor is where the How-To indicates.
Cranky
Have you run...

# rhn_register

...? That's the "proper" way to re-register for RHN.
RooMeat
With Plesk, you need to run reconfigurator.sh to complete the change to servername.
This is a extract from a HowTo I found some time ago....

Changing the Servername
Motivation:
The default servername from the RackShack image is
“plesk.rackshack.net”. This shows up when the server communicates
with other computers, and so it may be desirable for the administrator
to change the servername to something customized.
Importance:
Low
Procedure:
As usual, we log in as root. First we change the filename in the
/etc/hosts file:
# pico -w /etc/hosts
Then change plesk.rackshack.net to the servername of your choice.
Save the file and exit, by pressing
[control] + [x]
then
[y]
then
[enter]
Now we change the filename in the /etc/sysconfig/network file:
# pico -w /etc/sysconfig/network
Then change plesk.rackshack.net to the servername of your choice.
Save the file and exit, by pressing
[control] + [x]
then
[y]
then
[enter]
Now you need to reboot. There's probably an easier way, but
rebooting worked for me. Now run this command:
# /usr/local/psa/bin/reconfigurator.sh
It is the PSA reconfigurator. It'll ask you some basic questions about
your system. Here's the prompts and answers:
9
Do you really want to proceed? [N]
Press [Y], then [Enter].
Enter psa administrator e-mail address:
Enter your email address here, and press [Enter].
Enter full hostname of this machine [server.domain.com]:
In the server.domain.com part, what you specified before should come
up. If it's correct, just press [Enter]
Enter domain name [domain.com]:
Here, just the domain name comes up, as domain.com. It should be
correct if you edited the files before correctly. Just press [Enter].
Which one IP would you like to use for name-based virtual hosting?
Here, just pick the number that corresponds to the IP which you want
to use for name based hosting, and press [Enter]. (Unfortunately, as
far as I can tell, Plesk only lets you do name based hosting on ONE IP
address.)
Do you want to start Plesk after reconfiguration? [Y]
Press [Y] and then [Enter].
Is this correct? [Y]
Check your info to make sure everything is correct. If so, press [Y]
and press [Enter]. Otherwise go back and make corrections.
PSA will restart. There should be no error messages.
Notes:
Chosing a servername
Typically, servername is in the format:
servername.domainname.com
Not following this type of format may break some stuff in the server.

That's the same script that Night Hawk wrote (reconfigurator). If your using Horde this writes over servers.php and puts back the original settings.

This killed my email for a minute till I could change protocol from
IMP/ to IMP/NOTLS

this was in another thread talking about errors logging in.

Thanks for the help though!
RooMeat
reconfigurator.sh is a standard script within the plesk install.

And I used it to change my server as every server from RS (that has RSA) is configured with the name of plesk.rackshack.net

if the /etc/hosts and /etc/sysconfig/network are both correct when you check them, type hostname yourhostname onto the next command line, where 'yourhostname' is the name you have just changed it to.

Then reboot the server

when it comes back up, type in hostname and it will have changed.

Then, type in these two commands:

rm -f /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date*

rm -f /etc/sysconfig/rhn/systemid

to clear your old registration from red hat

rhn_register

re-register, and run up2date

I got it to work finally, it was rhn_register, not up2date --register as someone else told me. Thanks alot.
