Full Version: Is cpanel overrated or are we just cursed?

I am beginning to think the cpanel hype is just that...all hype.

Finally, after a hard drive replacement and two restores, we go through the WHM configuration "again" and it finally works right.

Then we change the hostname and try to set a root mysql password via WHM.

The server name change was shotty at best, /etc/hosts still had to be manually edited.

The mysql root password change via WHM failed alltogether.

So, I reboot the server for the hostname change to take effect.

Surprise surprise, now cpanel is reporting :

Invalid License File

WooHoo, now the cpanel license is corrupt and RS is talking about having to do another restore!

I have read and followed the documentation, and aside from the hostname change that required manual intervention
(that was not stated in the documentation by the way, we figured that out by browsing through the files that are supposed to be changed ),
we are attempting to use the WHM interface to configure everything.

Having said that, thus far all that comes to mind is :

What an amazingly overrated piece of crap! or maybe we're cursed... icon_sad.gif

Yes you are right...it's hype !!!

WHM/CPanel gives you far more features and flexibility than Ensim, but it very buggy and can cost you many hairs from your head.

I have had CPanel for a year now (not on RS with this box) and Ensim for about 2 years (just upgraded to Ensim Pro. And like all the reports say WHM/CPanel is buggy.....they aren't lying !!!

If only WHM/CPanel was as realible as Ensim or Plesk then it would be worth it. Be very very careful with how you set upgrades as well. Each night it will check for updates and install. Great for some, but alot of the times your customers scripts/db's aren't compatiable with that latest version. It certianly has been a headache.

Your host name problem is very common along with everything in WHM, double check each step to make sure it did it before moving to the next step.

I use this (from NightHawk):
1) login to your server via ssh
2) su -
3) wget http://ezsm.net/hostname.sh
5) sh hostname.sh
6) answer the questions
7) done.

My new boxes are Ensim Pro and I will be offering both. To those that are considering moving to CPanel, may I suggest you only offer this as a new service and not move your happy clients across (been there done that - and only some are happy).

Jeff.

I'm going to wait till Rackshack works out all its cpanel problems before getting it here myself... I have many cpanel machines in other datacenters, and I never had any issues. I think RS just needs to get a grip on how to work with cpanel properly.

If someone else is taking care of it CPANEL is nice. I have accounts elsewhere and everything is fine. I do not plan on dealing with the management of it myself.

I'm not quite sure what would be different from one datacenter to another, we install RedHat 7.3 and run their installer, end of process, this is all they say should have to be done.

I think you are just cursed, or unlucky on this one. icon_smile.gif

Does Cpanel have issues? yes. Seems like you are getting hit pretty hard with them.

FWIW, I have had several Cpanel servers. Small bugs here and there. I found the biggest problem was the updates. I set mine to do "manual" updates only. Then, when I had a block of dead time, I would have it update when I wanted it to so I could verify everything. Once you get it all working, I would reccomend setting it to NOT auto update.

Hope you get it all squared away. You will probably be happy(ier) with it then.

Sorry, Patrick, I did not mean for that to sound anti rackshack.. Just seems that there are a few issues a number of people are having here with the cpanel. So I am assuming it is a glitch somewhere, and I am hoping it will be worked out.

it seems that all you have been having is bad luck, I have run it for the last 4 months, and mine has been solid and stable. I moved my already happy customers over to the cpanel server and we heard nothing but praise from our customers. The only difference that i can see between our server and the rackshack ones is that we run rh 8 on our server instead of 7.3, that may be part of the issue, cause everything runs smoothly on 8.0.

What?!?!? Software that's not "perfect"...

Say it ain't so, Joe!!!

Well you did buy a Duron, you've been around long enough to know that they have lots of problems. Buying it from bargain basement also means you're getting something someone else gave up on - plus you are listed as an Ensim Partner...

You're biased, I think.

Yea, cPanel can drive you to drinking icon_biggrin.gif

I got a reseller where email on every one of his domains do not receive email. We fixed it by deleting the domain then re-adding it. And he is the only one where email is not working. Strange. Have not figured out the root cause of this one...

Actually we got one from the bargain basement because they were the first servers available, specifically for the purpose of porting our software over to cpanel.

That should speak for itself regarding your thoughts. icon_wink.gif

It was swapped out today with a new celeron 1.3, and the ram was replaced as well. Rackshack, as always, took great care of the issue.

Now all we need is some luck with this box!

Eventhough the duron did get swapped out, I will have to disagree with your bargain basement theory, as we just picked up a p4 1.7 dual 60gb 7200rpm 1GB ram ensim box for $1 setup and $129/mo from the basement today.

Funny though, the second drive was missing! We got it within hours, thanks again to the rackshack team for prompt service.

Ah yes, I forgot to add that bargain basement deal today came with 600GB of bandwidth per month...

You keep shopping from the server lists and we'll stick to the basement icon_smile.gif

Thats how I got my box - same config 2x60gb, 1gb ram, 1.7 p4 and 600gb transfer.

That extra 200gb of transfer is nice, and why I wont move out of this box. Right now that is a moot point as I think my heaviest month sofar has used under 5% of available transfer.

I set up a game server (mohaa/mohsp) just to get rid of some of it. icon_smile.gif

I am still trying to find out why rackshack would suggest a restore after a license file problem. The license has nothing to do with your server whatsoever. License file problems are due to your IP not being registered with cpanel or the wrong IP being registered. The first thing one should do is run /usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt and that generally fixes the problem. If not tell cpanel to register the IP with cpanel.

I've got all kinds of problems with Cpanel ranging frrom dns, ssl and host name changes. Most of the time I have to dig through their scripts and manually make changes my self to get thing working. The scripts are buggy as hell (running on rh8). I opened a dns ticket with cpanel almost a month ago and it still has not been addressed. - The lack of support I'm getting has made me seriously consider ripping it out and managing the server myself but then if it would work correctly then it great for the customer...

Hi Fellas,
just wanted to say my partner and I absolutely love our CPanel boxes icon_smile.gif We've had similar frustrations you describe with our Ensim system which drove us to CPanel and we have never been happier. We find that the WHM and CPanel interfaces are extremely user friendly and work beautifully.

I also had to manually change some things.... hostname, /etc/ips/remotedns, etc... I think the main thing to remember is that no matter what panelling software you might have, there is no substitute for gritty command line editing icon_smile.gif
