Tex
what version of plesk are you using

Tex
goog
i just upgraded to 7.1.4
Tex
when i click server at the left a new window comes up named
Server administration
ipaliasing is at the very top next to the system time when i click that it shows all the ip's that are bound to my server.
I am using psa v7.0.2
goog
Next to the system time on that window is an icon that says "IP Addresses", I think maybe that replaced the IP Aliasing thing for plesk 7.0.x...

I guess I'll just try to use that somehow, I'm not really sure how, though icon_razz.gif

Thanks for all the help Tex, I appreciate it.

Following in the footsetps of Jared Stenquist, I have created an updated guide to managing DNS. It's basically just updated to be more familiar to Plesk Reloaded and later versions of Plesk users.

So, here it is!
Nameserver Tutorial

Let me know if there are any mistakes in it!
Email me.

I have scanned all the posts here on setting up nameservers but still cannot find any that show how to setup nameservers for plesk on two different boxes.

I run about 20 servers with somewhere around 200 domains, I would like to setup name servers on two of these (prolly split between the two DCs too) and use those nameservers to host the DNS records for all my domains. It would also be nice to have these two nameservers auto-replicate any changes.

Can anyone outline how this can be done. I can't seem to find how to add records to DNS for domains and IP addresses not hosted on that server.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Squire
Hey Luke,

Take a trip over to the AtomicRocketTurtle site. In the Projects section there you'll find a script for managing automatic secondary DNS.
luke
thanks for the link, it looks like that is a perfect solution for auto-managing dns over two servers....its a start but what I would like to do is manage dns for domains on 20+ servers.

Something i found very interesting in that tutorial is that it states "this is entirely done external to PSA" and uses bind, so I am off to look for more info on bind!
JLChafardet
here is how i have now my dns templates, they work flawlessly you should try them

A .
A webmail..
MX . mail..
A mail..
A ftp..
NS . ns1.yournameserver.com.
NS . ns2.yournameserver.com.
PTR .
TXT . "v=spf1 a mx ptr"
A sitebuilder..

the A sitebuilder. is because i have sitebuilder installed (not working as nothing that isnt unfamiliar with sw-soft programs some times).

remove the red ones from your template and you will be fine, also edit via mysql shell the TXT record, or via phpmyadmin and add some spaces like this . TXT "v=spf1 a mx ptr" .

JLChafardet thanks for your help ( Bana yardımların için teşekkür ederim . )
JLChafardet
my pleasure to help.
mr_dizzle
my box came with 2 IP's. do i need 2 seperate for the nameservers?
JLChafardet
no those 2 are good enough.

regards,
mr_dizzle
can i put sites on those same 2 IP's or do 2 IP's have to be designated for the nameservers only?
JLChafardet
yes you can use those ips to host domains also.

regards,
mr_dizzle
i ordered 2 additional IP's for my 2 nameservers. when i go in to
server > IP Addresses, it only allows me to add 1 additional besides the main IP that is already listed there. do i need to add the 2 new IP's somewhere?

thanks

In order to bind the two new IP addresses to your server, you need to login to your Plesk as the admin, click on server, and then click on IP Aliasing.

Then, add the two IPs with subnet masks of 255.255.255.0. Otherwise, the two new IPs will not be properly bound to the server.

Kaelon

my plesk does not have an area for IP aliasing. what should i do?
Tex
just be sure and bind the new ip's to your server

she didn't miss it, its just the guide from the begining is outdated
plesk has made some changes since this thread first started
mr_dizzle
i was able to get my template looking similar to the examples in this thread as well as on http://www.jaredweb.com/tutorials/dns/index.html

when i go in to server > ip addresses, the main IP is listed. i have 2 new ip's that i was going to use for the nameservers, but it will only let me add 1 more ip there.

where do i bind my new ip's?

thanks
Tex
login to plesk
on the left side under system click server,
then under server Administration click
ip addresses, then click add new ip put in the ip
and the subnet mask choose shared or exclusive
click ok and your done
JLChafardet
server -> ip addresses -> add ip address

as many times as ip addresses ev1 have assigned to you
mr_dizzle
it only allows me to add 1 in addition to the main IP that is already there. i have 4 IP's i want to add, but i can only have 2 total there.
Tex
are you trying to add them to the server or to the ip pool
of the client

what version of plesk are you running

to the server. i'm using the newest version of plesk
Tex
click on the link and see if that helps

JLChafardet
yeah follow that link, it will explain exactly what do you need to do to add ips to your server.

now, keep in mind, you will have to add 2 A records for the domain where you will create the nameservers..

example:

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ip1
yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy ip2

go to domain.tld -> DNS -> Add A record

ns1.domain.tld - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
ADD(create cant remember the button label)

then again repeat the Add A Record

ns2.domain.tld - yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy

then you are all set.

best regards,
rammm
What happen if when i try to add all that records, system sometimes gives me an alert:

"DNS Record type invalid"

I don't know why, i'm trying to add records as in the first post and like this link

http://www.jaredweb.com/tutorials/dns/index.html

My Plesk version is 7.5 Reloaded.

Thanks
JLChafardet
give a try to the default dns template and add looking on my template the ones you dont have, they works with no problem

regards,
rammm
This is my configuration right now

Is this right?, cause evryone sets their DNSs so different....

Okay, I've read through all that it here in the forums, I've changed a few things, and my main problem is that the mail servers which initially appeared to be working fine, now just time out. Mail is being bounced to these addresses @lexoweb.co.uk

Mail errors are:
Final-Recipient: RFC822; nominet@lexoweb.co.uk
Action: failed
Status: 4.4.7
Remote-MTA: DNS; mail.lexoweb.co.uk
Last-Attempt-Date: Sun, 22 May 2005 09:28:09 -0700 (PDT)

And trying with http://www.dnsreport.com/

everything that should pass, passes except it can't connect to the mail servers.

It all looks fine to me.... I did have a whole set of four reverse look-ups but took them out. It's driving me BANANAS. Any help would be greatly hugely appreciated, thanks

Did you saw the screenshot i posted?

That is how plesk works more optimus in what DNS template concerns.

Please take a look at it

http://www.chafardet.com/plesk_dns_template.gif

That way i have been working for over a year now with no problems and all my domains in dnsstuff/dnsreport showes up great.

ok at plesk i add the recrods mynameserver.com NS ns1.mynameserver.com
mynameserver.com NS ns2. mynameserver.com and the others.
at the registar i have to point the domain name at ns1.mynameserver.com and ns2. mynameserver.com ?

How can I add a subdomain: sub.example.com to resolve by a different ns server ex: ns1.mydyndns.org and ns2.mydyndns.org ?

Is the following ok?

sub.example.com 14400 NS ns1.mydyndns.org
sub.example.com 14400 NS ns2.mydyndns.org

How long does it take to I actually see if it works?

Thanks...

I'm new to this whole game as well, and I have to say its been taking me a while to find this answer...its not even in the plesk install/admin manual...at least I didn't find it...so thank you Ladyhawk for the above tutorial, and thanks to everyone who asked the questions for clarification!!!

Now another Question --

I just had my server setup, and had the following problems with domain name transfers. The main domain is www.mydomain.net, and is currently pointed at the following name servers at EV1: dns1.ev1servers.net & dns2.ev1servers.net.

I have a total of 3 IP addresses. One shared and two exclusive. The other nameservers that are set up are dns1.mydomain.net & dns2.mydomain.net.

After registering my two exclusive IP addresses to the dns1.mydomain.net & dns2.mydomain.net name servers...Is it appropriate to now point www.mydomain.net from dns1.ev1servers.net & dns2.ev1servers.net to dns1.mydomain.net & dns2.mydomain.net?

Also, What must then be done with the domain that was initially created? Must it be deleted then added again?

Thanks to all for the help once again!!!
