Q --

Just got the server Setup

The main domain is www.mydomain.net, and is currently pointed at the following name servers at EV1: dns1.ev1servers.net & dns2.ev1servers.net.

I followed all the great tutorials here and now --
I have a total of 3 IP addresses. The main one shared and two exclusive ones. The 2 new IP addresses are set to the nameservers dns1.mydomain.net & dns2.mydomain.net.

I have registered my two exclusive IP addresses to the dns1.mydomain.net & dns2.mydomain.net name servers and they have propagated...

Now Confusion sets in...

Is it appropriate to now point the main domain www.mydomain.net from dns1.ev1servers.net & dns2.ev1servers.net to dns1.mydomain.net & dns2.mydomain.net?

Also, What must then be done with the domain and default client that was initially created under the main IP Address??? Must the Main IP address always have a domain and client associated with it??? What is the true significance of the main domain name???

Show me the light someone...please!!!

hello to all, i managed to do it well and it seems to be working perfect now!

as far as what you will be managing on plesk7 on the dns link are templates please note that the tags and are automatically setted by plesk to = yourmaindomain.ext and = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx main of your server. for this post i will use whatever.com as main domain and 10.10.10.1 as main ip address.

Go to your member area login, and request 2 ip addresses.
lets say that they assign you the next ips.

10.10.10.2 and 10.10.10.3

go to your domain name registrar and create the nameservers

ns1.whatever.com = 10.10.10.2
ns2.whatever.com = 10.10.10.3

Go to and Login in your PSA7 Admin area.

Click on the left panel on the link SERVER

go to the dns link.

then press the link default to reset the records to their default settings, when done, add a new NS reccord

you will see 2 text fields

Enter domain name   [TEXTFIELD]..
Enter nameserver *  [TEXTFIELD]

at this part! leave the first line (Enter domain name) blank (dont place nothing there)

and in the line of Enter nameserver type ns1.whatever.com

do the same to add ns2.whatever.com

***NOTE: remember that we will be using whatever.com as example domain name.

now add an A reccord.

Add a DNS record

Enter domain name *  [TEXTFIELD]..

Enter IP address *  [TEXTFIELD]

on the Enter domain name* field just type ns1
on the Enter IP Address* type 10.10.10.2

repeat this steep and add

on the Enter domain name* field just type ns2
on the Enter IP Address* type 10.10.10.3

now go to your main DNS page and it should look like this:

DNS records

DNS records (12)

Search
Search Show All      Show All     Remove Selected         Remove Selected

Host Record type Value

. A
. MX (10) mail..
. NS ns..
. NS ns1.whatever.com.
. NS ns2.whatever.com.
/ 24 PTR .
ftp.. CNAME .
mail.. A
ns.. A
ns1.. A 10.10.10.2
ns2.. A 10.10.10.3
webmail.. A

till now it is working perfect on my server icon_biggrin.gif with this configuration, as soon as i can i will add images to this post so you can see it if you need to.

Best regards,

Do you have to setup DNS in Plesk to use Load Balanced Pairs?

Following in the footsetps of Jared Stenquist, I have created an updated guide to managing DNS.  It's basically just updated to be more familiar to Plesk Reloaded and later versions of Plesk users.

So, here it is!
Nameserver Tutorial

Let me know if there are any mistakes in it!
Email me.

Excellent tutorial -- thanks so much. I went from a rank DNS beginner to a fully configured private nameserver hosting 5 domains in short order.

One issue for me. My dedicated server was firewalled by default, and I had to open up port 53 (UDP) on both nameserver ip's for visibility.

Thanks!

IMPORTANT:

After the forum migration from ev1servers to theplanet, some posts has been broken. This important thread is an example. In the 4 point of the tutorial, the complete information is the following:

<domain> NS ns1.mynameserver.com
<domain> NS ns2.mynameserver.com
<domain> A <ip>
webmail.<domain> A <ip>
ftp.<domain> A <domain>
mail.<domain> A <domain>
<domain>. MX 10 mail. <domain>.
<ip>/24 PTR <domain>
**<<Note the www CNAME is automatically added by Plesk>>

Hi all,

I know this topic been going quite long, i still do have some questions though. I have a server with godaddy's(Plesk 8.1.0), up to now i was registering all my .com domain as

ns1.firstsite.com ns2ns1.site1.com ns2.site1.com.com

ns1.secondsite.com ns2.secondsite.com

but i wanted to have one unique dns for all instead of having eash dns for eash site("not sure if i said it correctly"), so by reading this topic i understood that i am albe to have one dns for all.

so this what i have done up to now:

1. -> dedicated hosting manager and requested 2ip's, so now i have 3ips of total.
2. -> Plesk -> DNS -> Add new record -> i choose record type of NS -> and i entered my nameserver "ns1.myserver.com"

i repeated step 2 times so i have now:
ns1.myserver.com
ns2.myserver.com

so whats next? do i have to assign ns1.myserver.com & ns2.myserver.com with the new IP's that i got?
