Hi all, I just got my Ensim AMD II package.

There is only one IP address for the server. Can I setup an IP based site that uses the server's IP?

I have an existing domain that is resided somewhere on the net, and I want to make it the main site on this server. When I tried to add it to the site list, it failed because the domain's IP is different from the server's IP. Do I have to change the the DNS for my domain to ns1.rackshack.net before I can add it???

Thanks!

I changed my DNS to rackshack.net's DNS yesterday. Below is what WHOIS result for my domain, the DNS looks ok to me. But when I ping my domain, it still ping the old IP address.

Domain servers in listed order:

NS1.RACKSHACK.NET 207.218.223.132
NS2.RACKSHACK.NET 207.218.223.162

It takes a couple of days for the changes in whois to percolate around the internet. If the root servers haven't yet picked up the changes - your ping command won't either.

Try it again in a couple of days.

my DNS transfer is done now. But I still have problem with using the server's IP to add an IP based site.

It complains that my IP address is in list of registered namebased addresses.

Q1: Do I need to have more than 1 IP in order to host IP-based sites? It seems that the server's IP is reserved for name-based hosting.

Q2: If I want to host a name-based site(my own site), should I use the rackshack's DNS or my registrar's DNS for that site?

Q 1) yes
Q 2) if you setup your own DNS on your server you can use your personal nameservers.
To setup nameservers you need 2 IP addresses

Ok, thanks!

Now, I have some other questions.

Q3. During the signed up process, it asked us for a domain name for the new server, right? How shoudl we host that domain? IP-based or name-based?

Q4. When I type "http://serverIPAddress", it goes to the site/user Administrator's login page. I want to make it to show my main site's content, not the login page. How do I do that?

Q5: When I login to the appliance, in the "network settings", it shows

Host Name:  ensim
Domain Name:  rackshack.net

Can I change the hostname to "www", and the domain name to my own domain name?

Q5 = can of worms... man

That is the question of the new year. While it is easy to change the server name, the consequences can be a nightmare.
See:
Ensim Server Setup - Questions ????

and

ensim.rackshack.net?!

And you normally don't name the server "www", but instaed name it something like "host1" or "server1", names like "www", "mail", "ftp","pop", are not usually used without consequence for a server.

I have asked that question before and not had any answers. I have an opinion, but I'm still waiting for someone to say what the best practices are. And since my server is toast right now [due to name change problem above] I can't try anything.

This will not go to your site content until you have one and have ftp some files there.

As far as Q5 goes, I have confidence RS will resolve this issue and we will all be happy with our Ensims.

Name-based works fine for all my domains and sub-domains. I have an Ensim box as well.

Just register the domains with RS's DNS servers and your laughing.

I didn't touch my hostname. I don't know a thing about linux, waiting for my guru to setup the box for me, don't know yet if he will toast ensim or not, hehe.

cheers

Another thing, did you change your Domains DNS servers, with networksolutions, or whoever you registered it with? I believe RS can do this for you, for a cost. But it is easy to do, if have the passwords and stuff.
