Full Version: Question About FTP Capability
The Planet Forums > Control Panels > Plesk
Rajah
I have an AMD Duron w/ Ensim box and I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following:

- I know how to make site users who get their own email box and webspace with FTP capabilities, but I cannot seem to figure out if it is possible to "lock" them into their own area. For example, if I make a user "bob" at domain.com, his site is domain.com/~bob but when he FTPs using his info, he is able to back out of his directory and see the rest of the site. Granted he does not have permission to do anything, but is there anyway to limit him to his directory and nothing upwards?

I'm sorry if this has been answered or covered elsewhere on the site. I looked and looked and looked and could not find anything. icon_sad.gif

You need to run an ftpd that chroot's itself to the user's homedir. proftpd usually does this by default (and this is what plesk installs). I'm not sure what any of the other packages are running, but its probably possiable with more common ftpd's.

you may be able to edit the proftpd conf
file... i dont know which one though as it
depends on whether its a name-based
domain or an ip-based domain. i think
there is a proftpd conf file you can
edit to achieve this effect in /home/domain.com/etc/proftpd.conf.
try to see if editting that file can get the effect you
want or you may need to look at the
top level dir: /etc/proftpd? /etc/virtualhosting?

either way, you'll need to see how to
jail the virtual user by reading the docs
on the various directives at www.proftpd.org

I have to say I've just started reading the ProFTPd documnetation and is SUCKS.

It assumes that you are already familar with how everything runs. I'll admit it, I'm new to admining and ProFTPd in general, so being handed a list of directives without any simple examples or overview of how it all works is @#!@#!@#!@#!ed.

Does anybody know of a good ProFTPd tutorial which assume that I know nothing... icon_biggrin.gif
