Full Version: setting up nameservers
The Planet Forums > Control Panels > Plesk

Currently I am with another host running WHM/CPanel. I bought a dedicated box here at RS due to reliablility with my old host.

I had a reseller account.

Now, I had my customers input their nameservers as:

ns1.myhostingdomain.com
ns2.myhostingdomain.com

The way I set these up was in my registrar, there are options to manage your domain as a nameserver(s).

My old host just gave me two IPs, and I set one of the to go with ns1.domain.com and the other to go with ns2.domain.com.

Now, I have requested two additional Ips, but I'm not sure if I just put them in like it did with the other ones.

Can someone please shed some light?

Thanks
-Daniel

P.S. Running plesk 5

You can either let plesk run the name servers...or rackshack. If you use rackshacks servers. Just have your registrar update the ips for your ns1 and ns2 to be their ips.

If you want to host them yourself. Just use two ips from your box. If im correct. Then if you get future boxes just add more name servers to your domain...such as ns3 and ns4. Then have the clients on thast box use those name servers.

Anyone else?

thanks man. I'll probably go with option #1 right now, simply because it seems easier.

I just got the 2 ips i requested, to use those for my ns ip's, do I have to do anything like define them in plesk? and if so, how would I do that

thx

If you go with option 1 you do not need dns ips. JUst simple add teh domains in the rackshack members area and have them point to the ip of your server you want to have the virtual hosts on...thats it...

Actually..I tend to recommend when you get future boxes moving ns2 to the 2nd box...then the 3rd box gets ns3 ....and eventually you will want a dedicated box just for one of the nameservers....that way you will always have dns up...and plesk has made it easy to do these zone transfers....but anyway..that's only for as you grow...

can you please explain a bit more for me? I've used external nameserver, but have now started to use my own nameserver. At this moment I run two nameserver at server1 (ns1 and ns2) and at server2 I run ns3 and ns4.

How do you say you would configure this... and how to do excatly do? Do you have to add the domain name that is suppose to use my nameservers on BOTH servers? That is much work! Please explain... I understand a bit of it, but there is to much that I'm not sure about.. this should have been a howto icon_biggrin.gif

just set one of the servers up as a slave nameserver....it will automaticly get the zone forwards from the other server..you will not have to manually set them up...there are a few very good threads about doing this in the plesk forum....I personally run one of my nameservers (the slave) on a plain redhat box with nothing else on it...and then put one nameserver (the primary) on each of the plesk boxes....I will see if I can knock out a how-to ...although I am using an older method that was designed for plesk 2.5.5 and doesn't use the new features of 5.0.*...but it still works

I really hope you can put together a nice howto.. icon_biggrin.gif

I will work on it....it might take me a little bit..I have "a few" projects going right now...

I tried setting up the nameservers in plesk and I'm pretty sure I've done it right.

Now when i try to define the name servers at my registrar, it tells me that that IP is already associated with a name server. Why is this?

[edit]nm i think I've gotten it

I have to define the server DNS to ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com.

Seems that I have been busy...so my wife has taken up my slack.....go look at her how-to..I think it solves your problem:

http://forum.rackshack.net/showthread.php?...&threadid=20369

ok...so her how-to doesn't handle everything that was requested in this thread....but it's a start
