Hello,

I own a celeron 1.3ghz dedicated server from rackshack. I hired a server manager to set up all the software and features on the server as well as the nameservers. It is running the latest version of plesk and I got the server about a month ago.

Now the problem is, sometimes I can see the websites and sometimes I can't. I get complaints constantly from people saying they can't access their webmail or can't see their site. I will check if I can see them and sometimes I can and sometimes I can't.

-i have tested this stuff.. i'm on shaw cable internet, my neighbor is on telus dsl, and we both can't access the sites.
-now that's pretty rare if both shaw and telus are screwing up
-and then someone else on the same shaw can access it, while i can't
-and then i can and they can't

I don't know what to do and my server manager says he can see things fine...yet I'm getting complaints all over the place because they can't access their sites. I don't even know where the webstats are...http://www.s k y l a p.com/webstat or webstats isn't there.

Can you guys access these domains:
http://www.alphite.ca
http://www.momentum-entertainment.ca
http://www.skylap.com
http://hosting.skylap.com
http://www.web-decay.net

I can see them sometimes, then other times not. It is most often that they say "gateway timeout" and that for tons of other people.

The nameservers we're using are:
ns1.hitdns.com & ns2.hitdns.com
and
ns1.skylap.com & ns2.skylap.com

Can anyone help me? This is something that just doesn't make sense. I was told it is their ISPs but it doesn't make sense that there are so many ISPs screwing up....

Anyways, let me know what you guys think. I am desperate to fix this.

THANKS!

Hi Mark,

I get to all of your sites just fine, but that doesn't always mean much.

Post the DNS entries from your server and somebody might well spot something. Otherwise it's just a bit difficult to take a stab in the dark.

I would suggest posting one example of the domains you're using for nameservers (hitdns.com or skylap.com) and another of one of the domains which isn't working.

To be on the safe side, change the IP numbers to something like IP 1.1.1.1, IP 2.2.2.2, etc.

funny! I have these same problems you have described! Clients send in exact same problems. A particular client tries with different ISPs and he can see the sites with one, and not the other. Sometimes I can and sometimes I cannot see the sites. Then I try using a proxy and boom all the sites are immediately visible.
This is only happening on a few sites.

Anyone have any clues?

There's definately something weird going on. Same problem here.

I have a .ca domain, with primary NS on a server in the UK (NS is registered as a .com) and free secondary from granitecanyon.com.

I've had a problem a few times where I try and access my box and it times out.. try again and it works.. it's like the DNS lookup times out the first time. I read something somewhere about the NS records being in a different top level domain to the one I'm querying, something about glue? (sorry to be vague, it's late, been a long day)

Maybe check http://www.dnsreport.com/ for your DNS set up health check?
