Full Version: Cogentco routing (high ping) problems!

Please view the attached traceroute. The two hops that are pinging high (200's) are in Dallas so I'm hoping RS can fix this. Or please let me know who I need to contact to get this fixed. It's been going on for weeks now.

Oh, and the reason why I noticed this is because I have a game server setup on this server and every 20 seconds or so it spikes. If you run a traceroute or ping those hops that are 100 - 200 pings in my traceroute you'll notice that they fluctuate drastically. I had to stop my traceroute program at exactly the right time to catch this result. I sent in a troubleticket to RS so hopefully someone, somewhere will be able to fix it! icon_smile.gif

Cogent is bargain basement bandwidth and shouldn't be used for anything that's remotely important. I've left hosting companies that have put me on Cogent in the past. Unfortunately, I believe it's the only connection RS offers for the dedicated 10mb packages.

I don't have a dedicated package. I wish they hadn't put me on this... last year they network problems with my subnet almost every week. It would go down for at least 20 minutes. I almost switched to a different subnet then (they offered to because I complained so much). But I didn't want to update all my DNS. I wish I had because it's 10x harder now to update it then it would've been then.

Anyway, so I guess there's no chance of getting this fixed? icon_sad.gif

(Thx for the info btw!!!)

The thing about the 10mbps packages is no longer true in practice... you get a diversified mix of different routes with them as well as with the 400gigs...

Yes, RS used to put the 10mb people on Cogent only but that changed a few months ago so that they now also use the multi-homed bandwidth.

Then that's great news. And Cogent isn't bad if your destination is also served by Cogent. But their peering is horrible (hey, it costs money to have good peering, and what do you expect when you can get a dedicated 100mb line for a grand a month?!?! I believe it's 3k/month for resellers).
