I’m new to the whole server stuff and also Rackshack. But you guys have some of the best servers I have seen icon_smile.gif

So if I get a server what do I have to do?
What should I learn in order to manage a server?
What are the things that are involved with a server?

When I get a server can I just use the Ensim Control Panel and start hosting sites or does it require updates and patches?

If it does how do I install them? Is it like on windows?

I’m just like curious about the whole thing.

Any and all the suggestions are welcome icon_smile.gif

Thanks

I am new at this myself, but have been taking an extreme crash course lately. I would say the first and best thing you can do is check to make sure everything is as updated as it can get.

The easiest way to do that is read the How To section and see what parts get updated a lot.

some commands to remember:

rpm -q webppliance-version
rpm -q php
rpm -q squirrelmail
rpm -q perl
etc...etc...
(are you beginning to see a pattern here?)

once you check your versions against the newest updates in the How To forum, you can begin to actually make sure everything is updated. If you run into problems, Holler on the General forum board, or add a reply to the How To you are working with and chances are you will be answered fairly quickly.

Also, if your going to be getting an ensim, you dont want to update certain packages ending with 'ensim'

like sendmail-1234-ensim.rpm
Ensim has modified some rpms and you could end up breaking your server if you update them.

hehe, Linux is not like windows at all. and this is a good thing.

You will have to learn how to use SSH (not telnet since it is insecure) in order to update your server..

Theres 2 links in my sig that can help you get started.
