If in the forseeable future I only intend - probably for sanities sake - to have the one server is is strictly necessary to attempt this DNS change thingy. It strikes me that it is a subtefuge or ego thing to have one own name. As in if I have an office it's mostly in another's building. Even if eventually bits of my Plesk are used for other clients.
In short is it Okay to leave the rackshack bit in place?
Thanks

if you are talking about the hostname....no it is not safe to leave it at plesk.rackshack.net ....

if you are talking about using your own nameservers vs rs nameservers...sure it is ok to continue using rs nameservers..

having your own nameservers only makes life simplier....(it limits who you can blame when things go wrong).

I've found I can't FTP into my server so I suppose that an SSH client is needed. I saw in a post that Putty was free but on their site there are about 6 bits for MS ME - which one is needed ? Or do they all have to plugged in individually ?
In another post it was suggested that RH updates were available as an auto update when registered but from what I read they charge monthly for this some $19.95 I think ?
Was the free comment outdated or something...
Thanks Tony
Jonathan
Red Hat Network (up2date) is free for a single box registration. When the service is busy paid registrations take priority.

Do you mean you need an SSH client to log onto your server to fix your FTP problem?

Thanks fo rthe reply.
Redhat must be very busy then - as I can't find any free bit anywhere?
Having raised a trouble ticket I can now magically FTP this morning into the server.
The SSH client Putty seems great but the download area lists some 5 or so bits or applications. I wanted a client to allow a fairly secure way to telnet in and suspend port mapping etc.
Probably best to pay for SSH as I find the free and techie things so cryptic. There must be a special school for writing somewhat unclear English.
Thanks
Jonathan
To sign up for RHN you use the rhn_register program located on your server.

Usually found in /usr/bin/

This is the putty your want to download: http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest...t/x86/putty.exe

p.s. what part of Wales do you live in?

Oh great thanks for that.
Abertillery - allegedly the poorest part of anywhere in the UK: BBC survey. Ex mining small village (25,000) But I've managed to hike the Broadband awareness to 103 as of yesterday. But that's a long way off the 250 needed.
For me as a Sussex flat lander the scenery and walks are ideal and the overheads to distribute JetTec cartridges that much lower :-) But I manage quite well with ISDN and with BT

Nope no such animal in /usr/bin/ as rhn-register ?
I've raised a trouble ticket to ask where to look.

Run the command (as root of course)

slocate rhn_register

It should return a list of files one them will be the problem your looking for usually somewhere underneath /usr/.

I was lucky, we have had adsl up in North Wales for over 18 months now icon_smile.gif

Hi there,
I searched for rhn_register in these forums and the posts convince me that Plesk and RHN are a can of worms. From other posts they appear to be totally incompatible bedfellows.
I did actually look via FTP in usr/bin and I don't have rhn anywhere: but that's redundant as far as I'm concerned. The concensus of opinion seems to be that Plesk updates are the most reliable way to go. I'm getting kind of glad I don't rely on this to earn a living: this elastic driven plane has quite a few glitches ?

yes, you need to do the plesk updates...but you also need to update the other parts of your server. The rpm's. I personally do not recommend redhat network..as I have never liked it. I instead use autorpm, it is similar, but IMHO better. Btw, you will need to be using ssh , not ftp.

Just make sure that you don't let it update certain things... like sendmail (which isn't really installed..so it will try to install it)...lol
