Full Version: mySQL and Apache crashing (Urchin to blame?)

Hi

My server crashed overnight (UK) and has just been rebooted by Rackshack. The told me the following:

QUOTE
------------------------
server was found with the error message. . .

out of mem: killed process ###  (urchinwebd)

server is currentley back onlien accessible via ssh, http.
------------------------

Does this mean Urchin is likely to have caused it or was just the first program to suffer from a memory shortage after another program stole it all? Do you think it may happen again?

Also, in Webmin - what commands would I need to restart each individual service like Apache, qmail, ProFTPd and mySQL.

Would it be possible to remotely reboot the server via script that connects to the server without having to use Webmin and/or SSH?

Any ideas are appreciated? icon_smile.gif

ok..first off..it could be urchin...(I wouldn't really know as I don't run it)

but more importantly...you don't need webmin to restart services on your server. That is what ssh is for (or if you really need to use a cp to do it...plesk has that feature (in 5.0.* anyway).

to restart services (or even reboot the box) without using ssh...just login to plesk....hit server..then services....and pick the one you want there.... cool.gif

I have found out the source of the problem. It was the MON system monitor module in Webmin causing the system to crash. The CGI script is uses seemed to thieve all the memory causing mySQL to crash. When mySQL crashed the whole system slowed and after a few hours apache died too.

When mySQL crashes or is switched off is there a reason the entire system slows?

It's fine I've figured out the correct commands to restart specific services. I wanted these so that Webmin can monitor all major services (qmail, apache and mySQL) every 5 minutes and if there is no response to restart the service and email notification via an external SMTP server - it's working perfect at the minute! icon_biggrin.gif

One problem I am having though is figuring the command used to restart FTP - any ideas?

/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart

proftpd runs out of xinetd.d ...so you have to restart it..not proftpd directly.

Well it seems Webmin cannot monitor ProFTPd as it's run stand-alone - any other way of monitoring it that you know of? Is it ever likely to crash or is it very stable?

Also, do services often crash in general? My Apache has crashed a couple of times but Webmin successfully restarts it within 5 minutes.

I personally woulnd't recommend using webmin with plesk...so no..I don't know how to setup webmin to monitor ftp on a plesk. Although sim (found in these forums) does a pretty good job of service monitoring.

Hi

Do you know of problems with Plesk and Webmin conflicting or is there a specific reason you don't like the the two together?

yes...I never like having 2 cp's on the same box..as there will be issues. IE: if webmin changes something that plesk is supposed to be in control off....the next time plesk attempts to read the file and it doesn't match what plesk thinks it should be....you will have issues.

Some of the modules like the service monitor and the java file manager applet are useful though .... but I see what you're saying.
