I've been checking out RackShack for a while and may be moving my servers to RS very soon. I'll be moving to Linux from Win2k Server -- I did previously run my server on Solaris, but that was back in 1997. Anyhow...

What I am doing is working on a local install of RH 7.2 so I can get familiar with the system and learn what I will need in order to properly admin a RedHat 7.2 server here with RackShack.

I've been searching the forums for a while and have found lots of information - but have not found any info that basically lists everything that needs to be done in order to secure the system before getting started with setting up the webserver.

I'm not asking for a how-to on each item at this point, I will search the forums for that info & on other Linux sites. What would be really useful to me would be to have a simple list of individual tasks that I need to do.

For example:

1. upgrade openssh
2. turn off telnet
3. etc, etc.

Or, is the RedHat "up2date" program the better way to update & secure the system? If so, does "up2date" work right away on the server, or would I need to join the Red Hat Network in order to use it?

Thanks,

- John

you must not have made it to the How To catagory that has those two huge "First Steps" how to's..

It seemed to me as though those threads were relating to Plesk & Ensim setups. I'm looking to run a plain Red Hat 7.2 install. Without Plesk or Ensim.

I'm going to read through the thread "First things to do after you got a brand new WBL" in a moment. What does WBL refer to? WBL = plain Red Hat 7.2 system?

Thanks for your response & help.

WBL was/is RS's old White Box Linux, basically just not a brand name server, they came Plain, w/PSA and w/Ensim, Most of the steps in those how to's are pertinant in regards to security, many of the same services still need to be upgraded and from a Plain Redhat point, you can upgrade anything and dont have the various CP limitations..
