Hello,

My understanding of Linux is currently limited, I am learning. I was just curious as to method would be used to transfer large files to other web hosts? (for offsite backup purposes)

I am considering a dedicated rackshack solution, I know that RackShack doesn't have a backup option at the moment.... I live in Australia, data is VERY expensive here. If I had large database files I wanted to backup (GB's in size), I wouldn't be able to download them to my home PC on a regular basis as data is approx US$60 per GB here in Oz.

Thanks.

Which Linux server do you have with RS? If it has two drives, you should be aware that the second drive is effectively unusable by Plesk and can serve as a backup destination. No, it's not an offsite backup but it's better than nothing.

If you're particular about having the backup located offsite, you could try another low-cost dedicated server provider as the destination of the backup files. There are a few others that have pricing similar to RackShack's...check the Special Offers forum at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ for an idea of prices.

Thanks for the link, but I was wondering what was the actual procedure for transferring large files to other hosts? What command do you use?

Thanks.

PJS.

BTW, you mentioned Plesk doesn't allow you to use the second drive? Is it difficult to uninstall Plesk?

also, depending on how valuable your data is to you, you may consider leasing a second server as a backup to your first, to just to hold your backup data.

You can try the scripts at http://www.copernicusllc.com/article.php?s...=thread&order=0 ... It's not just one or two commands that would be used to backup files.

Well, it's not trivial. Some people have had problems while trying to uninstall Plesk and are then stuck in a position worse than when they started. Others have had success, though. Try Plesk.com and the forums there for more details...

I think the case is that Plesk can't use the second drive, not that Plesk doesn't allow you to use it (using normal command line stuff you can access it).

As for file transfer stuff, there's quite a lot of ways to do it.

You can use scp (secure copy, part of SSH)
rsync is an excellent way of doing offsite backups - see http://www.rsync.org

It also depends on the data. The data I need to back up is all stored in the MySQL database. I set up a "cron" job to automatically perform the SQL dump, and a "cron" job on the remote backup system to download the SQL dump. It's saved my hide at least once :-)
