hi all,

well, for the sake of security ... do we have to backup the log files frequently??

i used to backup the apache log files from plesk .. and the files get too huge at the end of the month ... i started thinking

if a hacker hacked the server and deleted the log files ..

my backuped log files won't be useful at all ..

in the hacker tampered the log files ..

my backuped log files also won't be useful

if the hacker didn't touch the log files ..

my backuped log files also won't be useful ... i could directly tail the access_log file and see what happened ..

am i right?

thanks:)

You are right. Logs are valuable at the precise moment or for postanalisys / stats.

If you are not looking at the logs frequently and don't need it's not necessary to backup them ... I just download weekly the rotated ones just for storing and analize locally when I have time.
