Full Version: the slashdot effect

Hi Guys,

A hypothetical.....

I was just wondering what sort of strain these 1GHz White Box's could tolerate before they'd fall over? As an example.. take the slashdot.org effect. So many of the pages they link to fall over within minutes of posting (depends on what the topic is of course).

I was wondering what sort of numbers could these 1GHz boxes deliver before they they'd submit to pressure? Say, a static webpage & a few gifs? (maybe 20KB in total). This may be a very general question, however I'm only looking for a general answer. 5 views a second? 50?

btw, I don't ever expect to be slashdotted, it's a nice thought though. icon_smile.gif

1. You put something up on your web site.
2. Someone surfs by and notices it, and figures it's interesting enough to submit to slashdot.org as a story.
3. Story with link to your site gets posted on Slashdot, and many of the thousands of eyeballs that see the story are suddenly rushing to your site.
4. (Optional step...) People start posting complaints at slashdot.org because the link is dead -- the server hosting the web site couldn't handle the traffic and died. icon_smile.gif
5. Story disappears off the Slashdot main page, and your site gradually returns to a more normal level of traffic.

So the "Slashdot effect" is the sudden spike of traffic that lasts a short time but has a tendency to bring web servers to a crawl.

when one of my sites was slashdotted i got 13,000 - 18,000 visitors/day to the site and it helded up on my dual p3 866 with 768mb ram server icon_biggrin.gif

3 or four of the sites on my server get 50000+ hits everyday, with heavily scripted web pages and lots of database access. This was running on a 500MHz Celeron with 384Megs up until last week. No slow downs, ever.

I'm sure the white boxes can handle much more.

just from my experience but...

usually the slashdot effect is the result of someones website bandwidth getting used up and not server failure.

but if cleanly set up a 1ghz system could easily handle a slashdotting icon_smile.gif
