I actually feel ashamed that I've even got to ask this question, but I've got my box setup(as much as I think I need it to be), however I cant download mail(god I said it........pathetic hu!).

I've tried the settings mail.domain.com and mail.server.com with the user name 'info' for the domain. I've also tried the user id as the full email address.

at first I got incorrect password. okay confusion started to set in. Then after using mail.serverdomain.com and 'info' I seemed to connect but no email was sent to me. So I sent myself some test mail. This did not come back or go into the account.

what ports do I need open for pop3 mail? or has anyone else got the correct format for pop3 collection from their server(surely everyone else has, and it's only me being the dumb dumb) or am I missing some email setup that I don't know about?

I hang my head in shame!

From /etc/services:

pop3 110/tcp pop-3 # POP version 3
pop3 110/udp pop-3
pop3s 995/tcp # POP-3 over SSL
pop3s 995/udp # POP-3 over SSL

Hint: If you want to find a port for a well-known service, you can 'grep' it from /etc/services (or just browse the file).

Also consider reading your email with "pine" over an ssh connection (just type "pine" at the command line). The good thing about pine is that you will never, ever contract a Windows Internet Worm when using it.

Yeah guys,

After all my panic it was a blinking tick box in the server section of plesk( I hang my head in shame).

And yes it was obvious(not!) that you had to do the ticky thing to enable any form of mail. In my defence though it did take over 40 people to view the thread, and nobody picked up how dumb I was.

Well all thats left is the SSL cert. and then I'll be waiting for the box to crash sometime in the next few days(fun!)
