I have come across some posts where people refer to the bad spelling of other posters.
Here are just some thoughts you have to keep in mind if you are one of them.

Many people are from other countries then an English speaking country.
Even if the one who makes the spelling mistake is posting from an English speaking country, it doesn’t mean this person was born there or lives there long enough to have mastered the English language.

As a little example:
There are native Spanish speaking people from various countries living in Miami for many years, they could have children and grandchildren who where born in the USA and they could be United States Citizens and they still barely speak English and can't write a single sentence.

They moved into a Spanish speaking neighborhood, they work with Spanish speaking coworkers and/or business owners, they shop in stores where Spanish speaking people serve them, they watch Spanish TV channels and they read Spanish newspapers.
They only needed to memorize a few sentences to get their Citizenship and they never had the need to learn English.

There are also people who where born and raised in an English speaking country and never where able to learn how to write and read correctly for various reasons.

It is not up to you to judge these people and frankly it shouldn't be any of your business.

So, next time you come across a post with spelling mistakes, before you make a comment like "are you stupid" or "you don't know how to spell" etc., stop for a second and think about how you would get your point across in Russian or Chinese and then think about how fortunate you are to be able to read and write in English perfectly.

If you don't understand what the poster means, just ask politely or don't post at all.

Just in case you wonder where my bad spelling and/or grammar comes from. English is not my native language and after all these years never writing in my native language, I even forgot how to do that.

Note: If I see a thread going off topic because of spelling police stopping by, I will delete the post and/or close the thread.

OK, here we go:

First of all there are many different forms of English, but in general I would say it is a form of communication used by humans, OK, parrots can do it too.
It is one of many ways of an accumulation of different sounds made by the vocal core and therefore it can become quite a task to interpret these sounds with letters to make someone far away understand what one wants to say.

The comments I made in another thread which seem to have touched a tender nerve and caused such a stir, were in response to the original poster's mention of his own spelling error. I doubt that I would have commented otherwise.

That being said, your point about those speaking English as a second language is well taken. But it's also important that the value of good language skills are not underestimated.

And FYI, I would NEVER, EVER make comments as you suggested above so maybe there are other 'spell checkers' on the boards to whom you are referring??

I was performing a search on google which produces three pages
of results. Half the results were pages in languages other than
"English". Needless to say they didn't help me. I can only read and write in "English".

My point is I look up to them, not down on them. They are fluent in multiple languages. Where as I, sorry to say, am stuck at one.

I tend to go easy on people learning english. After all it is a cat5 language ... one of the few hardest languages in the world to learn. We have too many damn grammer rules.

Fair play to Cyborg for starting this thread, I think it started over sisterscape taken the piss out of one of my post's for the mistake's in it, just a bit of fun he past a smart comment and I replyed with one, I am actually from Ireland and the mistakes I made should not have been made but hey I finished school at 15 so my grammar and spelling is bad and I know this I have people who work for me for sending offical documents within my company so I have not bothered working on my spelling. I went on to do my MCSA and CCNA by the way and now I work in I.T and run my own company on the side which does get a good bit of business. I plan to go on to do oracle but that is going off subject.

Cyborg has a very good point people come here for support, some may be new to unix/hosting what ever. Some people buying from rackshack for the first time might be checking out the boards to see how the support is. People flaming at new comers does not look all that good this isnt WHT this is a support forum.
