I am a little confused about using Plesk's DNS. Hopefull someone can clear a few things up for me!
What are the hostnames that a client should point his domain to?
What are the primary and secondary IP's?

Do you want to use your own DNS? If so, you need to have at least two IPs and do the following:
-Create the domain you want the DNS (i.e., if you want your customers to use ns1.joelmoss.com and ns2.joelmoss.com, then create an account for joelmoss.com)
- Go the the DNS of joelmoss.com and add the following records:
ns1.joelmoss.com A
(You select the DNS record, A and then click Add, then you enter ns1 in the first box and the IP you want as first nameserver in the second box, press update)
ns2.joelmoss.com A
(You select the DNS record, A and then click Add, then you enter ns2 in the first box and the IP you want as second nameserver in the second box, press update. Please note that the IP for ns1 and ns2 must be different. You cannot have two nameservers with the same IP, but you can have an IP ised for both a site and a nameserver).
joelmoss.com NS ns1.joelmoss.com
joelmoss.com NS ns2.joelmoss.com
(Select NS as record type and leave the first box empty, enter the full name server in the second box, do the same for the second nameserver).
- Go to Server --> DNS and add the following records:
NS ns1.joelmoss.com
NS ns2.joelmoss.com
(Select NS as record type and leave the first box empty, enter the full nameserver as in ns1.joelmoss.com in the second box and press update. Do the same for the second nameserver).
- Restart PSA ( /usr/local/psa/rc.d/psa restart )
- Register the DNS at your registrar.
- Give ns1.joelmoss.com and ns2.joelmoss.com to your clients and let 24-72 hours for the DNS to fully propagates around the internet.
Everytime you will create a new account, ns1.joelmoss.com and ns2.joelmoss.com will be put in the DNS file of the domain.
I hope it helps you a little and i also hope i havent forgotten anything

Thanks, thats great, but I have one more question!
When a new domain is created, will a DNS record be created for that domain on the DNS server? So I don't need to update any DNS or anything?

Yes, if you add
NS ns1.joelmoss.com
NS ns2.joelmoss.com
in the server DNS zome templete, everytime you add a domain, it will be added in the domain' DNS zone. You can also do it manually, but i prefer to have it done automatically.

Ok great! The only then comes when you have more than one server. Presumably you will have to setup a different set of nameservers on each server?
Is it any easier to use an external DNS?

Yes, you have to setup a new set of DNS for each server. I don't know if it's easier or harder tough as i always used the same server for DNS with both CPanel/WebPanel and Plesk.

Okay now for the big question. How many IP addresses does our server come with and how do you get more?

Can you use the IP address you server came with for the first name server or do you recomend getting two different IP addresses for the name servers?

Am I right in thinking that I *need not* configure my server to be a DNS, and instead use Rackshack's (ns1.rackshack.net) ?
How do they know when I add a new domain? Do I have to
notify RS?

kalaranga:
No you don't have to set up your server to be DNS as well. You can use ns1.rackshack.net and ns2.rackshack.net
You will need to add those the the Rackshack DNS though. Just log into the "members" area at
www.rackshack.net and select the "DNS Configuration link along the left side. From there you can add/edit/delete domains and sub-domains.

For resellers on the same server, do you do exactly the same? (obviously with their domain)

Boomer,
You need a unique IP for SSL and you have to check the "reverse mapping" option in the DNS.
Each domain name that you want to have SSL needs it's own IP.

eee How can I do this? Should I go to register.com or netsol.com (whenever my domain is) and ask them for what?
