Full Version: Brute force protection: how to unclock root

Cpanel/wmh's brute force protection locked the root account on the server. I tried to open a ticket, but now for about 9-10 hours that does not seem to go anywhere.

Does anyone know how can I unlock the root account without having root access?

Thank you.

kamurj,

Looks like one of our technicians has brought the server back up. I was able to login via the password listed.

It's probably advisable to move SSH off of port 22 if you enable the brute force protection. With the amount of automated scanning going on around the internet, it's likely that the root account will get locked out fairly often.

Also, create a wheeled user account with an obscure login. If by chance someone does figure out which port ssh is on, they'll be less likely to hit that account.
