Ok here it goes.

I have a cPanel controlled server.
I d like to install a remote sql server.

This would be easy if it was exclusivly for me but here are the facts:

1) Server has over 300 active accts
2) Almost everyone uses databases
3) Top achievement for most of them is clicking "Install PHPbb forum" and having it (not updated) until someone defiles it

I dd like to:
1) Not pay another cPanel licence
2) Install a server on Fedora 64 system (Celeron D server)
3) Painlessly move all databases from 1 server to another
4) Not like to tell database owners they have to actually do something about their sites (or to do as little as possible).
5) As little downtime as possible

Please give me some guidance since I can not experiment on live server.
Preferably someone who has already done something similar.

Thank you

Igor,

You don't have to buy another cPanel license in order to use cpanel to setup a remote mysql box. Get a clean box with a fresh linux install + ssh & mysql of your choice. Then from your cPanel WHM click on "Setup Remote MySQL server". Fill in the info and and click the "Setup" button. This will copy over some necessary control files and setup your grant tables to work with your cpanel server. You can now copy over your current databases and this will greatly offset your system load.

A note: I do recommend that you use a secondary server that you can connect directly with a cross-over cable; or at the very least is in the same datacenter so that the mysql queries will be speedy.
